Mosquito spraying! Want to protect the flock.

Apparently it's permethrin, so we should be OK. Looks like from the info sheet it's a good thing we don't keep bees. Yikes! We are due for quite a bit of rain tonight & tomorrow, so if they get the spraying in, I won't have to worry too much about residue, either. Most of the flock stays in...

Mosquito spraying! Want to protect the flock.

Just heard back from the city: Permanone in the product being used. Google and I are having a lunchtime conversation...

    Weather affecting laying?

Maybe going to molt? Also, though y'all haven't seen much of the sun lately, the days are getting shorter. Mine don't lay as well in prolonged super heat with humidity, so my girls were off last week, too. Most of September actually. Something else, too--if they're staying in a lot due to...

Mosquito spraying! Want to protect the flock.

Oh, good idea on the garbage bags. That's one thing I'm hoping the AgEx agent can help me with--if I can close them up rather than move them. Luckily, too, we have a huge yard. I wonder just how far into the back yard this stuff will come. We have a full walk-in coop with a good sized run...

Mosquito spraying! Want to protect the flock.

We're in DFW, constant monitoring of mosquitoes for West Nile virus. Hit the lottery tonight with a reverse-911 from my city. City will be spraying my neighborhood tomorrow night. I'll call our city & our county extension office tomorrow morning but I'm also trying to prepare. Do I need to...

Help me think this thru: divorcing my roo from his hens

He's human aggressive but manageable. I hate to ditch him because he's an amazing guard. We have a family of hawks either on our property or a neighbor's, and while the brooder coop is completely enclosed, I did lose a chick this spring when the dang things managed to snag one and tried to...

Help me think this thru: divorcing my roo from his hens

Got a roo with attitude, only reasons he's not in the stew pot are that he was my DD7s first chick, and he's very, very good at his roosterly duties(guarding, tidbitting, and the obvious :P). He's the handsome guy in my avatar(EE/Ameraucana, whatever the feed store was calling the chicks that...

Does the coop need a door that closes to keep the Chicken's inside of their house?

The doors are not just for weather but to keep out predators. After a coon got through our wire and killed all 9 of our hens(only the roo survived), we've locked them inside every night. We are in a suburb but lots of natural park/open space nearby, so we are susceptible to raccoons, skunks...

When, Who, How many, Why, What...do you hatch eggs?

When: whenever the hens go broody. Which is right now. I have 5 3wk olds, and 3 1 day olds. :) Who: whoever laid in the nesting box last. My 3 crazy banties have hatched out two of their own plus two Red Stars, 1 Australorp, 1 Delaware, 1SLW, and 1 I'm not sure. Baby Daddy is an...

How do you care for a new mama and chicks, in the main flock?

I've got 2 broody hens being momma to 5 babies, too. Another day or two and your momma hen will probably start leading them all over the place. She's teaching them how to forage. I keep the chick feed full, and when I refill it, I toss a handful of scratch elsewhere to distract the big girls...

    Priceless!!

Congratulations! Just think, when you get your second egg, your production costs will be cut in half! ;)

    Help this newbie

Mine were hatched by a broody hen out in the coop Sat March 2 and we've had several mild freezes since then. They don't get to move into the house after hatching. :D Granted, they're under mommas(I have 2 hens sharing 5 chicks), and I have a heat lamp out there as well, but as long as you've...

How Long will Broody stay on nest after eggs start hatching?

Maybe just another day or so. Keep your fingers crossed for the next 24 hours. I just tossed 3 eggs that I left under my banty in vain for the last 5 days after 1 chick hatched. She and another momma were just on and off too much(they switch nests, they switch chicks, they all end up in one...

    Help this newbie

Well, you're definitely in the right place for advice! Fair warning, chickens are addictive. :) Two books I have on my bookshelf are Storey's Guide to Raising Poultry, and Chickens for Dummies. And I search for lots of topics on these forums. Hope chickie continues to heal. If it is...

    Help this newbie

Not trying to state the probably obvious, but if chickie is with other chicks, remove it so the others won't peck on it more. It almost looks to me like a rodent attack--are your chicks in a predator proof coop? Mice and rats can get in some rrreeeaaalllyyy small holes. I've about 50-50 luck...

"Golden Buff/Red Star chicks are sex-linked"--but I can't find a site that tells WHAT color they are

Thanks for the quick response. Pooh, I was hoping I could tell the kids on at least one, "yes we can keep her, no I won't eat it.". We had 6 hatch out last weekend(2 banties, the RS, a GLW mix, an Australorp mix, and a SLW mix.). We lost one of the banties already, but everyone else is doing...

"Golden Buff/Red Star chicks are sex-linked"--but I can't find a site that tells WHAT color they are

I have a chick from my red star(my crazy banties love to brood, so I let them hatch out good layers. :) ). I think the daddy roo is my full Ameraucana(only other option for dad is Ameraucana/Dominique). Chick is yellow with light red tint(hoping pix posts). Any ideas if I have a boy or girl?

Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Woohoo! I have a partial answer to my PP about my Ameraucana Roo over my banty, and a Delaware Roo over an Ameraucana hen. Somebody laid a bluish green egg today! I just don't know which young lady is now a hen. Time to pull out DS's wildlife camera! :)

new baby chicks hatched! *WARNING: overload of cute pictures*

Ahhh....I just died from cuteness overload! They. Are. Precious! :) You should consider making notecards out of some of those pix.
