    Alberta spruce

Has anyone had success with the chickens NOT eating an Alberta spruce? We plan to use the dwarf variety to hide some skinny fence posts, and I hoping the evergreen will be unappealing to the girls. They have free range time, so it won't be the only green thing they have access to.

Bantam rooster mating with full size hens

Okay, from what I have read this is totally possible. I am curious who has experience with this. Does anyone have any pics they can post of resulting chicks or full grown offspring? We are going to get a bantam roo, we live in the city and cannot bother our neighbors with a full size boy. A...

    Quarantine Advice

I have read, the awesome article here on introducing new birds to the flock. I have a small yard, we live in the city. At first I was planing the quarantine in a sectioned off area of our pretty large enclosed run. Then I figured that would be a bad idea since I would have to walk thru the run...

    Araucana 13 weeks-Picture heavy

Check out this tail-should I consider my chicken that is supposed to lay some colorful eggs a rooster? First time chicken owner, so really not sure. Couldn't get a good shot of the face, but no comb or wattles that are bigger than any of the other girls, just the tail feathers.

    Light augmentation

:rolleyes:Reading Storey's Guide To Raising Chickens, 3rd edition, pp. 192-195, Gail Demerow gives detailed information about light exposure. My chicks were hatched 8/24/12 so if I have done my math correctly (and I know I didn't!), they should be getting 14h 5min of daylight this week. I think...

Okay Veterans, Throw Your Guesses At The Newbie!!!

This chicken is the oddball in my flock of 7, all supposedly hatched at the same time from Mt Healthy Hatchery. Her rear end is a mystery, and she is 8 weeks old. The second pic is a good representative of the size and feathering of the other 6 (all different breeds) The brhama in the background...

No tail feathers at almost 7 weeks! ROO?? Pics to Compare

Here is Cybil, the GL Wyandotte, and the one that I am concerned is a roo. She has no tail feathers and is a bit smaller than the rest. I got them all as one day old chicks from Mt Healthy Hatchery. Golden Comet and SL Wyandotte to compare SL wyandotte, all the chicks pretty much have tail...

    Sleeping chickens

Okay, I have read a million times that chickens are practically catatonic when they sleep. My 5 week old pullets seem to be very light sleepers. The minute I peek in on them they are up and ready to go. We just put them out in the coop this week, so I check on them before I go to bed around 11...

    Any Ideas what we have??

I know we have a golden comet, barred rock and the rest are up for grabs. I know what I should have too, and looking at pictures of other chickens the same age as the breeds we think we have, I am not so sure...They are all supposed to be hens, 4 weeks old too. i picked them up from Mt Health...

    New in Cincinnati

Hi all! We are just begining out backyard chicken keeping adventure. My family and I selected 6 chickens for our flock from Mt Healthy Hatchery. This was the minimum order for pick up. After getting the little chicks home to their warm safe brooder I watched them endlessly. I then noticed that...
