    Cleaning the Run

What about pine shavings? Will that help? My run is fairly large and it would take a LOT of sand to get a 5-6 inch layer...

    Cleaning the Run

I have had my chickens for about a year now and have never had a problem with smell until recently. I thought it was their coop so I gave it a good scrubbing. It sparkles now, but the smell is obviously coming from their attached enclosed run. If I put sand in, how deep of a layer should it be...

    Broody Hen/Eggs questions!!

Well, it's done. My husband and I built a temporary cage running from one of our nesting boxes and going the length of our coop, so she has room to move around, but is still confined to a smaller space and a specific nesting box. My hatching eggs came today and we left her sitting on eggs from...

    Broody Hen/Eggs questions!!

I have a Silkie that has been broody for more than two months now. I have ordered two hatching eggs for her to lay on and hopefully hatch. The eggs are coming on Monday. I am concerned because I have other hens laying and my Silkie will switch between nesting boxes to lay on which ever nest...

    Concerns about Free Ranging

I have four chickens - 2 GLWs, a white silkie and a blue silkie rooster. I keep them confined all the time in their run for safety reasons. We regularly see foxes on our property and my husband used to raise bobwhite quail...the little Houdinis escaped all the time so hawks have come to...

Being this close to Easer, we have plastic eggs out with our decorations. I'll put two of them under her for a while and then some chicks. Thank you everyone for your advice!! I'll let you know how it goes!

    Questions about a broody Silkie.

Well, the Tractor Supply store near me will be getting Americauna chicks any day. Maybe I'll get one or two and put them under her. I live in Eastern PA so it's still pretty cold most days here. Is it too early to put them out with her or will she make sure they are kept warm enough? If I...

    Questions about a broody Silkie.

Is it common for a hen to go broody if there is nothing actually under her? If she thinks there is an egg there, how long will she go without it "hatching" before she gives up on it?

    Questions about a broody Silkie.

I have a 9 month old Silkie hen. She had been regularly laying 3-4 eggs per week until a few weeks ago. Now she is always found in a nesting box as if she is sitting on eggs, but she has not layed an egg in almost 4 weeks. She sometimes sits on eggs layed by my GLWs, but lately she is sitting...

    Pet Ordinance

I didn't read the entire post, so I apologize if your question has already been answered, but I also live in Blandon. This is a number for the Township of Maidencreek - (610) 926-4920. Give them a call, you don't have to go there. Whether or not you can keep chickens depends on where you live...

When can chicks be moved outside?

So they should be fully feathered at 6 weeks? I live in Eastern PA...if I order some chicks now, will they have time to properly acclimate to the approaching cold weather? Sorry if these sound like stupid questions, I adopted my first chickens, 2GLWs and a white silkie, in September and they...

    Newest addition!

The little Silkie has been named Nugget...as in chicken nugget. LOL! She seems like a healthy bird. She is alert, active and talkative. No runniness from her eyes or nostrils, and no sign of parasites on her skin. Do I need to do anything before I introduce her to my existing two GLWs? I...

    Help!....My son wants a dog!

Yeah, the hair and drool are a problem for a lot of people. LOL! It doesn't bother me because I spent my childhood with Siberian Huskies and St. Bernards, so I'm used to it. I'm glad you've narrowed it down. Good luck!

    Newest addition!

This chicken math is gonna be my downfall! Here is a pic of the newest addition to our family. She is approx 12 weeks old and yet to be named because my stepdaughter hasn't come home from school yet to name her, and this is her chicken. And anyone with kids knows that this means she will name...

    Help!....My son wants a dog!

I'm new here and I haven't read all of the posts, so if you have made a decision already, I apologize. But if you haven't chosen a dog, and you don't mind size and hair, I would suggest considering getting a Newfoundland. I have one and she is the absolute best dog I have ever owned...
