My 9 chicks are 5 weeks old and have been in our coop since they were two weeks old. They have a heat lamp at night to make sure the temp is right. It's been around 100 degrees here and it's hot in the coop, so I've been letting them out into the run (about 50 feet per side) under a huge tree...
I'm not sure of the breeds yet. I got a group of assorted brown egg layers and haven't been able to determine the breed yet. The coop is about 5 feet by 4 feet, and its about 6 feet tall.
I got 9 babies three weeks old and have moved them outside to our existing coop. I'm in Georgia, so it's plenty warm during the day and they have their red heat lamp on at night. They are growing SO fast! But I've noticed that they chase each other around and fly at each other. Is this normal...
I have 3 two year old chickens (2 were killed), and we just adopted a shelter dog, part golden retriever, part something else (?). He's very sweet and is 8 years old. He has chased the chickens since we got him, and tries to get in their coop fence. We have recently put up an electric fence...
About three months ago, a hawk (I think) got one of my five hens. Then about a month and a half ago, a neighbors dog got another one, leaving me with three. Since the last episode, the remaining hens have slowed waaaay down on laying eggs. I never get more than one a day, and some days, none. It...
I have a small flock of 5 girls that are about 1 1/2 years old. Recently I've lost two to predators ( 1 hawk and 1 dog) . That is pretty traumatic. I let them out to free-range about 3 hours a day, and I'm home when they do.So now I'm wondering...should I just stay with the ones I have left, or...
Wow. Thanks you all! I now have the list, and I washed off the beans to make sure there wasn't too much salt. Funny thing, though...my ladies usually eat anything, but they turned up their beaks at the beans. Go figure! And Ontario...I'm coming to your house for supper. It all sounds yummy...
I have left over black bean soup I'd like to give my girsl for breakfast this morning, but don't know if that is wise. I know there is a great list on this site, but don't know how to find it. If someone will help me out, I'll bookmark it for future reference. Thanks. Of course, the beans are in...
Help. Twice my DH and I have found a 6 foot rat snake in our nesting boxes. Plus the eggs were gone...of course. Does anyone know how I can prevent that from happening?? I'm pretty sure their henhouse is secure against snakes, but both the people door and the "peep door" are open all day so the...
Its broiling here in Eastern Georgia, too. I have hooked up a four foot tall revolving sprinkler just outside their coop run, and turned it on. At first they avoided it, but after about ten minutes they are playing in the "rain" and seem quite happy. It also keeps the dirt in the run wet and...
We built our coop around an old greenhouse frame with a shelf in it. My 2 nest boxes are on one side of the shelf, and my 5 hens huddle on the other side of the shelf when I go out to close them in for the night. There are no windows (it has lots of airspace below the roof) so I can't see if...
My 5 hens are down to 3 eggs a day, and all the helpful folks at my hubby's work are telling him to study up on molting. I'd like to know how to recogonize the signs and know what to do for them and exactly what to expect. Someone told DH not to feed them for a few days...that kind of thing. I'd...
I also have five hens in a coop with an enclosed run. I let them out in the run early in the morning and they can't wait to get out to start their day. They run down the ramp. Even in the pouring rain! I think being cooped up all day would be frustrating for them and might lead to pecking and...
Just as an update, especially to Gritstar. I tried the milk crate and it worked great. I still hung the waterer at just the level to hold it in place if they should bump it when on the crate. So far today, there is still clean water in it and I am happy.
