I had 8 chicks from a fall hatch. I was easily able to determine which ones were cockerels and rehomed them. I kept the 3 pullets and what I thought was one cockerel, hoping to rehome him in the future.
I say cockerel because it was one of the larger chicks, with a bigger comb and legs when...
I have a hatch of six chicks: one frizzle and three smooth feathered. It's clear that I've got 2 cockerels and 3 pullets, but I'm unsure about this one. 5.5 wks old. Pullet or cockerel? And why?
I have a 2 wk old chick with a slipped tendon - I don't know how long it's been that way.
She holds her leg up in a bent position and the lower leg, from the knee down, is rotated outward. She can't grasp with her toes and hops on the outside of her foot.
I started doing physio with her today...
I've had a couple of different roosters and have had high fertility rates. My current rooster's fertility was good last year. He's just turned two and most of my hatches this year are crap - lots of unfertilized eggs and hatch rates of 50-70%.
He's in with 20-25 hens which is high but that's...
I have a medical question that I'm hoping someone can advise me on.
This is Corazon, who experienced a major prolapsed vent on Sunday. I managed to get most of it back in at the time. She's crated on her own, eating, drinking and in good spirits. I'm given her calcium rich foods, clipped the...
Hi All,
I write a chicken blog and am doing several series: Having Chickens Is A Great Way To Meet Your Neighbours; Chicken Illnesses/Emergencies and Predators.
I want to do a photo essay on weird eggs and am looking for folks who are willing to let me use their photos (with credit): egg...
I write a chicken blog and have been working on a series related to illnesses/emergencies and have come to the end of the issues I've dealt with first hand (i.e. prolapsed vent, split beak, assisted hatches, bumblefoot, egg binding). I have very little experience with predator attacks.
I'm...

I used to pick up coffee grounds from Starbucks every week. They kept a bin in their walk in dumpster area and allowed me to take whatever I wanted.
I found this discarded bakery rack and picked it up thinking it might come in handy. I ended up mounting it horizontally as roost bars in my coop...
I host a blog and this is a post I wrote today. Has anyone ever experienced so many hens getting bumblefoot? And both feet? Any ideas about what could have caused it?
Do you remember my story about my meeting Laurie on New Year’s Eve to deal with Ella’s bumblefoot? If you need a reminder: it’s...
I'm thinking this chick is a cockerel. If anyone thinks I'm wrong, please chime in because I'd like to be wrong.
Mother is 3/4 Black Copper Marans x 1/4 Naked Neck, father is 3/4 Silver Spangled Appenzeller Spitzhauben x 1/4 Silver Laced Polish, born Sept 1st. Looks more like its mum, but is...
Can someone confirm sex for me?
All have the same father: SS Appenzeller Spitzhauben x SL Polish. I'm thinking that the frizzle (born Aug 19) is a cockerel and that the other two (from Easter Egger hens), spangled one born July 1st and dark one Aug 18, are pullets.
I have eggs in the incubator. Its day 22 for eleven and day 21 for two. Six chicks have hatched, 3 chicks are trying (two since yesterday) and no action on four yet.
The chicks that have hatched (some 36 hrs ago) are very active, motoring around and bumping into the eggs that have yet to hatch...
I noticed one of my 2 month old pullets looked a bit off @5 days ago - nothing dramatic, she just seemed a bit slow and a bit fluffed up. She hadn't improved so 3 days ago I put her in a dog crate to monitor her input/output. The first day she ate a bit, drank a lot and pooped normally. She...
Long story, a little bit shorter: I had eggs under a broody hen who abandoned them on day 6. She may have been off them for up to 24 hrs (hot day so I think they were ok) before I transferred them to an incubator. Humidity was too high for first two days, then I had a 7 hr power outage. After...
This is my first chick with scissor beak. SS Appenzeller Spitzhauben x EE. Broody, not incubator, hatch, born between June 18th -July 1st. Would like some confirmation that its a pullet or cockerel before I find it a new home.
I had a broody hen sitting on 9 eggs. I'm not sure what happened (maybe our heat wave) but she got off the eggs on day 6.
She may have been off them for as long as 24 hrs but the temperature in the coop was @85f. Unfortunately she also pooped on them but I decided to give them a chance. I...
I hatched 3 purebred Icelandics from a friend's eggs - born May 12th (3 months old). Pullet or cockerel? The patterned one looks like a cockerel and I'm hoping the splash and orange/blue one are pullets.
I'm leaning toward cockerels. Both are SS Appenzeller Spitzhauben x - black one was born May 1st (doesn't have either very pointed or wide, rounded saddle feathers, has narrow hackle feathers), black & white one was born June 16th.
Opinions? Why?
