Hi there, I have a silkie who came into laying a couple months ago. She has always had perfect eggs up until a couple weeks ago, then i started noticing bumps on the "pointy" parts of her eggs which i assumed were calcium deposits. I figured it was "fine" and "something that just happens" but...
If there is visible blood I would recommend keeping her away from any other chickens until she has healed up more. Chickens can be cannibalistic if there is blood. Her feathers will grow back in a few weeks or so. Good luck!
Congrats tho NotableNancy. Do you have any hens yet or are you waiting to start your flock? I just started this hen adventure a few months ago... late summer and it is one of the coolest things I've done. I love it, and this website is great for info!!!
Tellynpeep, mostly everything that I read about hawks said that they do usually eat the head... Wish I would have examined closer for talon marks but honestly I didnt want to and just promptly buried her in our backyard.
My GLW Scarlett layed her first egg Wednesday morning. I went out to see the ladies (they free range) and noticed she wasnt out and about with the flock so I started panicking that something bad happened to her, but then I opened the coop door and saw her sitting in one of our four nest boxes...
I recently added another hen to my flock a couple weeks ago. She seemed totally fine at first but I noticed yesterday one of her eyes was bubbly so I've been treating her with tylan 50 for the last couple days. I've never had this issue but everything I read said it is probably a chronic...
Just came across this thread and its neat. My girls love mealworms too, I just pick them up at our pet store in a container. I also keep a bowl on my kitchen counter and throw all of our table scraps into that and then once a day go give it to the chickens. They absolutely love it. If youre not...
I had the same problem here in Seattle and I was told to try Sweet PDZ. It is like a sandy powderish substrate that is sold as "horse stall refresher". It is amazing stuff, it really cuts down the ammonia and helps absorb moisture really well. I cleaned out all the shaving from my coop, covered...
Never heard of this but maybe she has an eggshell fragment stuck? Maybe try giving her a warm bath with gentle soap and washing her vent really well. I do this to my girls every couple months and they love it, I also make sure I blow dry them fully after the bath and sometimes I keep them inside...
I hope your hen is doing better gigglsslms. My girl is doing much better since the tylan and I hope the same happens for your girl. I'm sorry for what you are both going through
My girls had the same kind of looking poop. Thought it was probably roundworms so I treated them with wazine and their stools like much more "normal" now.
I had the same thing happen today with one of my hens except she also has some bubbles forming in the corner of one of her eyes. Everything I read said respitory infection so I went down to the feed store and got Tylan 50 and squirted one mL down her throat today. It is an antibiotic. Good luck...
Hi there, noticed today that an amercauna hen I have has a bubbly eye so I ran down to the feed store and got some tylan 50. I have quarantined her in an xlarge dog kennel in our garage but dont know how much tylan to give her. I had an mL syringe and I got some needles to attach. I'd prefer to...
Nice coop! Looks a lot like mine that my husband built for me on a whim bc I wanted chickens and didnt know why. Great story to go along with it, very entertaining. Thanks for sharing
Also, don't eat the eggs for at least 10 days after giving them the wazine! I wormed my girls with it about a month back because I thought I saw a couple tapeworms in a stool. Havent seen any since
