Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! May you and your families enjoy much bounty!
A wonderful blessing came my way today. I met a new friend (I hope), and she brought me some wonderful EGGS! She was so very kind to do that. They are delicious!
Happy T-Day, all!
Thank you for your kindness in thinking of me Arielle! I really do need to find fresh eggs. Even if not kept on grass, eggs from happy hens living outdoors beats supermarket eggs anyday. I so miss fresh eggs! (I miss my dear hens even more, of course)
I am blind with a bit of eyesight. So, I'm...
Does anyone near me in MA near Norton keep chickens on grass, either in a backyard or in a pasture? I know most keep hens in a secure pen, due to predators.
I ask because I would like to regularly buy eggs, as I am now in an apartment. In the past, my hens were on grass, and the flavor and...
I hope that whoever goes has a wonderful time! Maybe there'll be some d'Anvers and d'Uccles there. Liljunie, sending you good thoughts for success with those dear Silkie chicks.
Thanks for responding, Welly. I might just be strolling by your house when I walk my dog daily. I'm also on the Norton/Taunton line! I'm delighted to meet you, neighbor! I bet your chickens are very well-loved.
Hello, everyone! My name is Patti. I live in Norton, MA. Anyone close? I currently have no chickens, but do love chickens so. I'm very pleased to meet you all!
Pleased to meet you, Liza! How about trying Craigslist? Be sure to have some lovely photos of your fluffy boys. It isn't easy to place roos, but you might give Craigslist a try. Very best of luck to you!
That makes sense, Aubrey, that there's so much variety in them, a range along the spectrum. Maybe to our advantage is that there's no true pen to work around the birds in. We're all just in a large fenced backyard, with food bowls under one bush, water bowls under another, etc.
My d'Anvers...
Rather than worry about this, we'll see how the 2 boys we may keep behave at maturity. If we have any aggression issues, we'll try a few solutions others have had success with. And, we'll give it some time to work. Genetics & nature may (or may not) allow for both of these boys to be "pets," but...
I'll keep my eye out for the potential aggression. About at what age did you notice it start? I've never raised a rooster from a chick before.
Worst case scenario, if both of the friendly boys turn aggressive, I still have 2 sweet pullets.
Best case scenario, both of the super- friendly...
Excellent post, SpeckledHen! I love having a roo to do sentry duty in the pseudo free range situation of the fenced backyard as the girls forage. Everyone respects the alarm calls.
Aubrey also mentioned aggression before I got my eggs, I just didn't expect 2 of the four cockerels to constantly...
Happy 4th, everyone! :)
I have rooster aggression questions.. and none of my 8-week-old boys is aggressive, just wondering some things for the future.
SpeckledHen, if you're around, I've a few questions, if I may. I know you've had quite a few mille fleur cockerels. Did any remain...
Queenchick, it sounds like your garden is really producing well these days! I'll need to harvest the garlic here as the tops are turning yellow now.
I had no idea baby chicks could be so much fun, and turn into one's best friends! At 7 weeks old, the Barbu d'Anvers are becoming such great...
Toxic chicken, your baby blue ameraucana chick is adorable! How's the silkie Momma doing?
Rosie, have fun camping! The turkey poults sound adorable!
Anyone else getting mosquito-bitten while doing chicken chores out there? It seems to be a very itchy time right now. Hoping everyone is doing...
Wow, these d'Anvers are getting the really chunky, muscular chests now, and they're just 7 weeks! The cockerels are getting the green iridesence in their tails, too. Eye color is really changing and getting ready to become that gorgeous orange! White splashes are coming through in the...
