Earlier this summer one of my hens became broody. I moved her to a safe private coop where she sat for two weeks then walked off. This time when someone went broody I watched carefully but did not move her out of the big coop. This evening when I checked (hatch date tomorrow) the egg was...
I don't know if it's actually the stomach or what, but right past where the poop comes out one of the chicks looks like he is just full of something? Poop? It's not hard but gives when I push on it. There isn't any poop stuck all over, doesn't look like pasty butt.
I was reaching down into...
The heat is right, the water and food are right, every day I find 1-3 more dead chicks. Should I move them into a different coop? Clean out everything and start over.
I am just sick. These were silkies and d'uccles in colors I did not have and they are dying every. single. day.
I hope this isn't a re-post.
I've got 31 babies in here with one mama hen. They are in a corner of the coop partitioned off by a little fence. Regular waterer and feeder. Most of the shavings are scooped out. There are two heat lamp areas available. I was afraid they were suffocating...
I got a shipment of 27 chicks from Ideal and after about a week I've found 1-3 dead every day. They have enough heat, room to get away from the heat, tetracycline in their water.
What can I do? At this rate I'm going to lose every single chick. They are silkies and d'uccles.
When yet another of my silkies went broody I took seven eggs from the incubator and gave them to her. Cut her time by half! Hatch was due tomorrow but already she had a beautiful soft gray baby and a black almost out! Now she'll be happy, and I can turn the incubator off.
15 D'uccles- brown reds, buff columbians and golden necks.
12 silkies- partridge, buff and red.
They are joining my 13 other silkie babies, whites, blacks, partridges and one splash!
Mama hen setting 7 eggs, I'm going to be up to my ears in chicks!
I've got some of those big yellow sticky things hanging up, but is there a safe spray? Where could I get one of those fly sprays that are approved for dairy use?
Only 4 out of 14 eggs in the incubator hatched, but little broody has hatched 7 out of 8, and I'm not giving up on #8 just yet as it's only been 24 hours since they started hatching.
I'm relieved that the eggs are apparently good, I guess I'm just a lousy incubator mom.
The incubator wasn't so good, only 4 out of 14, but broody has three chicks under her and four eggs left to go. I'll leave them til this afternoon but then I need to move them to a bigger pen so I can get food and water in there. Right now they are in a pet carrier with food and water cups...
The eggs I've been putting in the incubator aren't doing well. This last time four hatched out of 14. I figured it was something I was doing wrong with the heat or humidity although both seemed just right. So I let my broody set on 7 eggs. Nothing. Today is day 22 and nothing. A lady I...
If I can quickly take the eggs out and rinse out the bottom and put the eggs back in will it be alright? I need to clean a mess out. I don't think it'll take more than a couple of minutes.
Eggs in incubator were supposed to hatch on Tuesday. Four hatched, one cracked and died and nothing from the rest of them so far. How long do I wait before I give up?
It looks like all of the eggs are developing but they are not breaking through??? There are chicks inside?
Ideal poultry pronouces it "Dee Uncles" I thought it was "Doo Clay" but was told that is incorrect too. I thought it was French?
So...some of you show people, how do you pronounce it???
I have 14 eggs in the incubator. Last night there was a tiny hole in one egg, this morning I have a baby, but none of the other eggs look like anything is going on. I never did hear any peeping at all. Today is day 21. How long do I wait with the other 13? I'm afraid if I open it for a good...
