    Mottled Houdan chick walking issues

My mottled houdan chick walks (or should I say stumbles) like drunken person. It only takes a few steps and then stops to rest. It does this again and again. Hatched May 29. I have pine wood shavings on the floor. None of the other chick do this. I am going to try letting it walk around in...

    Is this a Buff Orpington?

I ordered a mixed mess, have no idea what breeds they sent, but I'm up for a good mystery. I have identified several so far, this one looks like the other Orpingtons in every respect but it has a stripe of lighter color in the center of the back. Sorry the picture is so poor. They are quick...

    Feathers not growing back

I have separated my hens from the roosters because the roosters were too rough and broke off the feathers. My hens are all wearing saddles which helped with their backs, but the wings don't seem to be growing back. Do I need to pull out the remaining stub where the feather used to be?

Rooster has Red Raw Rear End

Hello, I have a New Hampshire Red rooster born in Feb 2013. He has been healthy and active with no problems since I got him. A few weeks ago I noticed a few of my hens missing feathers on their backs and I thought perhaps it was mites or lice so I bathed with flea shampoo and dusted them all...

One of my Buff "Spice Girls" is in trouble

One of my girls has been off by herself for a couple days now. She is weak and lethargic, refusing to stand. I thought at first it was just because of the cold snap we had, and I saw her eating yesterday morn. When I took her to the vet this am, she said she had no comm. disease, but appeared...

    Why do they do this?

I noticed my chickens wiping their beaks back and forth on the ground almost like they are wiping their mouth after eating.

Only the White Rocks are affected

When I went out last night to check on them, everybody was good, then this morning I find all four of the White Rocks have been pecked until they are bleeding. None of the other chicks have any visible pecked sores. Ugh! I separated the four white ones in a smaller bin, I treated the sores...

Thank you to everyone on BYC!

I have been coming here for months reading everything I could get my eyes on to learn as much about raising baby chicks. I owe it all to you guys. I have my fuzzy butts now and they are doing well - all because you guys give such good advice. Thank you soooo much.

Who will be the first to guess the sex and breed of this mystery chick?

I got this FREE EXOTIC CHICK with my order of 25 pullets from Murray Hatchery. It is a Cinnamon color. Very Cute, but I don't know what kind it is. Anyone have an idea? Here's a few pictures. Sorry they are fuzzy, our camera skills leave much to be desired. It's the one in the center. The...

To paint or not to paint?

I'm wondering if I should paint the inside off my coop walls and stuff. Do the chickens peck the walls? What are the pros and cons of painting vs not painting the inside?

    Sand in the coop

Those of you that use sand on your coop floor please tell me what type of sand you buy and where do you obtain it? I see a 60# tube of Quikcrete sand on the TS website. I don't have a truck but I am really leaning toward using sand instead of pine shavings.

    PVC Feeder

I built two of those PVC feeders, one for outside and one for inside, but I'm worried that the one outside will get wet when it rains. Anyone have any suggestions on how to protect it from the rain? I don't have an overhang to put it under.

    How much do chickens eat?

Can someone tell me how much a chicken eats each day? I know it will probably be a trial and error kind of thing to find the right amount for my birds, (I will have 13) but I was looking for a starting point. I don't want to put out too much food and have leftovers to attract unwanted animals. I...

    Height of roost

Hello, I'm trying to decide how high to place the roost and the nesting boxes. I am finally getting my coop underway. The chicks won't be in the hen house until they get their feathers, but I'm still not sure how high to place the roost. I have read to put it at least 1 foot from the roof but...

I don't have chickens yet but I' m reading everything I can trying to learn a lot before I get my new flock in Spring. I keep reading stuff about trimming beaks and clipping nails. Can someone tell me what that's all about? How often do you have to do that? How do I learn to do that?

    North Texas Poultry Show

I don't have my hens yet, but I am thinking I might like to try showing my hens when I do get some-in time of course, not right away. My question is does anyone know where I can go to learn about showing, and maybe attend a show so I can see what is involved? I guess if I intend to show them...

    What do you think?

I don't want a rooster, heard too many bad things about roos, but I plan to wait until after my hens start laying and order some hatching eggs, then substitute the hatching eggs for the ones my hens lay and let them set. If/when the eggs hatch is it safe to leave them in the coop with the hen...

    Another question about feeding

Okay so I don't have my chickens yet. Have the breeds picked out and know where I plan to purchase my chicks in Spring, but for now I am content to learn all I can so I will be ready to be a good mom! LOL I read chickens need at least 10 square feet of space each for grazing. I will have a...

    How much is enough?

Hi, I'm new, haven't gotten my chickens yet. Planning for Spring. I am so excited! I plan to only leave food out during the day, but have water both inside and out. I'm not sure how much to feed. How do I know how much a chicken eats? I plan to have six hens but I may get more to start with. I...
