    Hen won't eat, won't move

She is almost 4 years old and she was laying last week, and yes she doesn't have an egg stuck for sure.she isn't pooping though. I gave her some water and her crop feels big but empty, like it's full of air almost? It's probably been a year since I wormed her, and I don't see any mites at all...

    Hen won't eat, won't move

I noticed on Monday my Rhode Island red hen was standing in one place with a droopy comb and she wasn't interested in worms. I put some electrolytes in her water hoping that would help, she was the same Tuesday and yesterday she wouldn't move, she wants to lay in one spot and won't eat or...

    Rat problem

Hi, we have a problem. We have had chickens for years and in the last few months, we noticed some rats and they are digging under the coop into the run and eating the food. So I started putting the food in at night, we live next to a field by the way . I haven't seen any for awhile, but I see a...

Since the water keeps freezing, do you use heated bowls? What's a good solution to frozen solid water?

My chickens hate the snow.. Too cold?

I live in Oregon, Portland and it doesn't snow usually. We got a few inches yesterday and they won't even leave the coop. We even have a run for them, which is covered, but it was windy so it blew a bit of snow in, and they're just cold I think. It's 20 degrees, is that okay for them? Is there...

    eye stuck shut

I was going to post a pic after you asked but it looks better after i rinsed it with warm water and used eye drops. I think she got pecked in the eye! Shes low on the pecking order i think, so that makes sense. It looks like theres a little scab under her eye, where her bottom "lashes" would be...

    eye stuck shut

My easter egger, Harriet, is about 6 months old and yesterday i saw her and her eye was fine and then a few hours later i came back and her eye had been watering and she kept closing it. I looked closely and she didnt have any signs of being pecked in the eye, there was no blood or anything. But...

Review by '' on item 'Rhode Island Red'

I have 3 and they lay almost everyday. My favorite hen, Ginger, is very friendly and sweet. Shes the sweetest and smartest chicken I have. She follows me around, everytime I turn around shes right there. If you want a breed with lots of eggs, this is for you.

    I think I found a roundworm?

I swear, found mites in my coop two days ago and then today i found two...about 1-2 inch long white, i think, worms. :( I dont want to know what else can happen! They werent moving at all. They look like some kind of bean sprout but Im pretty sure it was a worm. Is this what roundworms look...

Is sevin dust really safe for chickens? (permethrin and de)

The list of cautions is so lengthy. I found some at home depot but didnt buy it for mite treatment, because I dont want to hurt my chickens. If I cant breathe it in, why can they? I bought some diatomaceous earth and some other powder i found at wilco, permethrin. I read on here both these...

    MOLES!

There is a mole who lives in my backyard, he makes molehills all over the yard and (I think) It gave my dogs fleas. I got chickens this year and I think this mole gave them mites, it keeps popping up hills in the chicken run! I dont know how to kill this thing. If theres a humane way to get rid...

Help!! mites, what do I do?! :(

I was cleaning my coop today and moved a box and underneath I found huge colonies of mites. I am assuming, from what Ive read, they must be chicken mites because I Looked at all my birds, i have only 6, and I couldnt see a single mite or any signs of mites either. The mites were red and grey. I...

do i need an overhang on my chicken run?

I bought corrugated plastic roofing already, 8 feet which will exactly fit the run. No overhang at all whatsoever. My coop has overhang though. I want to keep the rain out of the run so it stays dry. It rains a lot in the winter in oregon and it gets windy. So what would be the point of an...

Whats the best roofing for a chicken run?

We have a run coming off our coop, since we live in Oregon and its getting into rainy season we need to get a roof on our run area. I dont like the mud! and Im sure the chickens dont either! The run is wood with chicken wire for sides. So whatever we put for a roof needs to drill into wood well...

Found out I have a cockerel

After talking to some users on BYC I have been enlightened that my Dark Brahma isn't a pullet, she is a he! We got 6 chicks expecting them all to be female, but we got a cockerel on accident I suppose. So our flock is composed of 2 rhode island reds, an easter egg layer, a silver laced wyandotte...
