I am a bit obsessive complusive about my chickens feet. if i see minor cuts and blood anywhere i wash and then spray with a blue terramyacin spray. i just feel that they are stepping in their own poop and in the mud and dirt its so easy for feet to get infected. good luck!
hi
I tried my flock on pellets they really dont like them,
i then tried them on mash and they dont like that either and they waste a whole lot.
i then decided on a compromise I mix crumbles with what they call mixed fowl food here and add hulled sunflower, wheat, barley, oats, linseed and...
mine get cooked cold brown rice as a standard treat and today they had some dried meal worms which they totally love. 19 chickens running in opposite directions with meal worms in their beaks. on seriously hot days like today and this whole week i give grapes and baby tomatoes out the fridge...
i didnt think to ask truthfully
i think the issue with pox is that there are a variety of strains so the birds wouldn't necessarily be immune to all once they have had one
i am also not sure how many strains are present in the vacine either
food for thought
Um actually if i may chime in i spoke to an avian vet today because i was thinking of vaccinating my flock as they have pox too due to wet and mozzies. she said that pox is not like human chicken pox they do not develop an immunity so u have to vaccinate every year if u live in an area where...
I revamped an old pump house on my property, used cleaned oil drumms for nesting boxes and an old piece of melamine countertop to give them another level to sit by the window.
i just had to share some pics of my chooks loving their sand and DE
its in a big cat sand tray and it does spray every where when 4 chickens all get in at once but i figure i am putting it down on the coop floor any way
i would love to have them but i think we are too wet in durban in the summer and i have heard that rain gets their plumage very wet down to the skin and they dont cope so well with that
Mine are mad about rice, they like bread but rice is their favourite.
I read though that like with people white rice is not great so mine have a a cup of brown in the morning and the evening when they come out to peck and scratch and to get them in at night.
I add raw rolled oats to their food...
thanks have taken your advice and mongoose proofed the run
i think i am going to double the size of the run and only really let them have supervised free range time when they are fully grown
i am also taking my dogs down on mongoose patrol once a day not sure my silly male doberman will know...
hi
this is he ir she about 2 weeks ago.
no comb or wattle yet but quite an upright posture and quite dominant
sadly i lost him or her yesterday to a mongoose i think
but i would still like to know what you think
thanks for that
after loosing what i think was one of my roosters to a mongoose yesterday i have becided to rather wait and hatch some of my own chicks when my hens are ready.
think that will be the most natural way and more than likely i will get more than one hen sitting at the same time so...
hi another question
i have a flock of 18 hens who are all boschvelders and about 3 months old.
if i wanted to add more hens of 4 weeks old or so when do you reckon is the best time?
i am concerned tht the newbies will be beaten up because they will be so small even though my other hens and one...
hi i have a question
I bought 18 hens and 2 roosters at 4 weeks old
as yet i am unable to tell which are which
yesterday i saw 2 of the "roosters" having a stand down match with their neck plumage all ruffled up. i assume those 2 are the roosters then?
i have never seen any of the others do...
Let me begin by saying I never was much of a bird person. Other animals certainly. And sure as a kid I had a budgie which my dear little sister let out and it off it went to be free. It was cute but it was caged and that just never worked for me. So as an adult owning my own small holding just...
