Alaskan, did your crestless ones ever develops a crest? I'm starting to cull and there is no sense in keeping a crestless cockerel in my flock when I already have too many boys. TIA[/@]
Yes, I scramble a dozen and put them in a Ziploc and into the deep freeze. When ready to use, I thaw them add a couple slices of cheese and cook them up like normal. They also work great for camping. **disclaimer they look terrible coming out of the bag but I promise they taste good. Family...
We eat most of them , give away/sell some. I also freeze my extras in the spring because in the winter we get very few eggs. (I dont add light by personal choice)
Do you have a rooster? If you do then once the eggs are laid you'll need a broody hen or incubator to have them hatch. If you search there are many threads on the topic.
Do you want them to be able to walk around or just keep cool? Our coop Is approximately 8-12 inches from the ground and all the hens fit just fine when they want to cool off or lay eggs in unreachable places. So just depends on what your goal is.
Thanks e72071. I wanted to post and get opinions because I feel like they are pullets but I'm also hoping so hard for a boy that I feel like I make up what I want to see sometimes haha.
I ordered 5 straight run EE's in hopes of getting at least 2 cockerels.....appears to be all pullets...
I'm looking for some gender guesses for these chicks. Unlike the usual requests I am hoping for a couple roosters but so far everyone is appearing feminine. These 3 are my best hopes... They were hatched on March 1st and are approx. 6.5 weeks old.
(chick 2 & 3 are 2nd and 3rd from the left...
I ordered 5 straight run EEs hoping for a rooster or two and I only have one that appears to be semi masculine at 3.5wks. Any other time I've wanted all pullets and gotten an oops or two. Luck of the draw haha
Sorry, I just noticed some very manly characteristics on that one. I'm currently hoping I have a couple roosters in my straight run batch of EEs but it isn't looking promising. Usually I dont want roosters and get at least half; this time I think I'll be lucky to get one
That white one is a rooster, just fyi. They will usually be pretty big by around 6-7 months but cam keep growing for up to 2 years depending on genetics.
Help!!
I have a 1 week old EE chick whose crop is about the size of a golf ball. It is soft and squishy but he keeps stretching his neck like he can't swallow.
It is not hard, so is it an impaction I caught early? Or something else? I gave him olive oil and sprinkled some sand around incase he...
