Love your tutorial. Just spent the day building the two level wooden brooder. (and rearranging the garage so there is a place to put it :) ) It will be a new home for a couple dozen birds later this week. Thank you.

Awesome. Thanks for the step-by-step. How many birds fit comfortably in there? We have 24 coming next month.

Could this be a pheasant chick?

There is definitely a mini-comb. So, we have a chicken, and probably a dude? Thanks for the info!

Could this be a pheasant chick?

My friend found a couple chicks by the side of the road in a park here in Colorado Springs. She assumed they were chickens and took them home. One died overnight. She brought the other one to me today. (pictures below) The chick is healthy and vigorous and noisy. Another friend (who has...

Ringneck Pheasants- post your pics or questions.

Are all of these chicks ringneck pheasants? Our friend found chicks by the side of the road in a park and brought the survivor to us (thinking they were chickens). Another friend who has experience with both chickens and pheasants said that she thinks the chicks were abandoned/orphaned wild...

Wierd spiral grooves on my eggs???

Hey all. I have a Barred Rock girl (Mayflower) who's about 2 1/2 and just started laying again after a couple month's hiatus. She laid a couple normal eggs, but over the last four days, she has laid eggs with a progressively deeper and deeper spiral groove from the top to the bottom. We see...

    What got my girls?

When a neighborhood black lab "played" our bird to death, she had hardly a mark on her anywhere. Sounds like a dog, probably a bird-dog breed.

They Got My Chickens....in My House!!!!!!!!!!(more story on Page3)

That whole thing is just scary. We have renters next door (with a very irresponsible landlord) who have several VERY large dogs and other large dogs who stay over with them frequently, including a couple very active pit bulls. When they first moved here, the dogs jumped the front fence and went...

How many of you use hay for your coops?

I use wood chips in the nest and inside their little coop, and straw all over the run to help the mud-and-muck. It makes it smell SO much better and the girls love scratching around in it. They have a ball.

    Colorado

Quote: Hey there, Jennamah! My folks are in HR. We are in Colorado Springs. We have a heat lamp with thermostat that turns on when the inside of the coop (dog house) gets below about 32*. It's less for the birds (they can handle it), more for keeping the water liquid and the eggs from...

RIR - Boy or Girl? w/pics

Hi! We have a 4-week old RIR chick. "Her" feathers are coming in, and for the first time in my experience, some of the tail feathers are curled downward. Also, "she" has a much livelier personality than any other chick we've had, exploring, jumping, generally being much more animated and...

Have you seen a roo attack a squirrel ? ?

I've seen my hens attack a squirrel, cat, any other bird who lands in the yard. Of course, I've also seen them huddle on top of their roof when a squirrel got "trapped" inside their coop. Poor silly critters...

Everyone quit laying - I feel like chicken tonight

Hey all. I'm frustrated here. I actually had to BUY eggs for the first time in years. We have 5 hens, all just a couple years old. In the past, they have all laid more or less consistently. For the last couple months, egg production has been dropping, until now, we get maybe 1-2 eggs/week...

Integrating young injured bird into adult flock (pretty urgent)

Quote: Yes, I just got her a couple hours ago. How does the quarantine prevent disease? They are still close (same pen-separate areas). What should I be watching for during the quarantine?

Integrating young injured bird into adult flock (pretty urgent)

Ok, I made her a little sub-pen inside the big pen. She has her own food/water and some shade/bedding. She wasn't happy about being in it at first. I'm still not sure she is. Thank you everyone for your advice! I do have ONE quiet bird (the Polish that the other girls usually push around)...

Integrating young injured bird into adult flock (pretty urgent)

Hi. I have a new 7-week old pullet/chick and four adult hens. The little one is hiding under the coop. I can't get her to come out, and the big girls are not being nice to her. When we first picked her up, I noticed some feathers missing from her tail area, but once we got her home (before...

    Gross and Evil or Efficient?

Why do grocery stores brag about "vegetarian-fed hens"? Is there some kind of benefit? Just "granola" hype? (or do they feed them real vegetarians?)
