About half my girls came to me with what I thought were clipped beaks. I figured left alone they would just grow back. But it's been 6 months and some of the beaks are shorter and worse. They don't seem to be in pain, but what causes this and how can I fix it? Some only have a little nub left...
Hey!
I just started keeping chickens in November, and on Backyard chickens I've come across some hilarious names for eggs and chickens I'd never heard before. So, just wondering what names for eggs have you heard of?
My favorite so far is "cackle-berries" hahaha.
Warm front this week in Ontario with a projected high of +14C tomorrow, we'll see if the warm weather perks up the girls for more laying... today was +10C and I only got one egg. . On the up side, my girley who was molting seems to be getting her feathers back! Maybe she'll get to work!
That's really interesting about the weights of eggs. My Canadian gals must know thier eggs have to be big up here, because (when I do get them...) they're huge! sometimes the egg carton can't close they are so big hahaha.... but I think i'd gladly exchange size for more eggs.I'm more like...
One of mine too! I was worried at first because was thinking, "why would a chicken start (what looks like a hard molt) in the middle of Dec! In the snow!" crazy little thing....
Well, since my first post on this thread it been everything from -18 to +1 and the most i've been getting is two eggs a day out of 10 hens.

I got my girls a few months ago at just over a year old. They used to sleep perched high in their old coop but ever since I brought them to my place and new coop they started sleeping in the nesting boxes. (In retrospect I think part of the problem was I had clipped their wings) Now they sleep...
Hi, thought I would gather from the enormous expertise on BYC.
Is a mid-Dec molt possible? My one girls looks like she is going through a hard molt that started a couple weeks ago. Which is kind of wierding me out. Where I live in Ontario we have 2 feet of snow on the ground and it's cold...

This web site was really informative. I found it really interesting that unwashed eggs in the fridge keep best and up to 7 months. I thought i'd have to give away all the extra eggs from my 10 girls in the summer, but now I know I can safely keep them frozen or unwashed and in the...
Thanks so much for your advice! I was wondering... because my brother-in-law said when he was in Africa he usually kept eggs under his bed for weeks at a time and they were okay. I thought that was a little weird but hey eggs are pretty amazing, you never know!
