I raise all my chicks communally. I allow brooder chicks to start free ranging around 5 weeks but they have a place where they can get away from the bigger chickens if they need to - a door open only enough to let the little ones through.
I would start by giving her a nice long soak in a warm bath to see if it loosens her up enough to pass the egg. If you saw white stuff, it is possible an egg broke inside her. Put Oregano and Garlic (and lots of it) in her feed - both have antibiotic properties. Keep her separated until she can...
LOL!! He's awesome - and also lucky to be alive and healthy. Many SFH with vaulted skulls don't make it out of the egg. He almost certainly resulted from breeding a crested roo with a crested hen... which is why many folks try not to do this.
But - he's great!
I have 2 SFH lapbirds and a few more that don't mind being handled a bit. Others are curious but don't want to be handled. All different personalities.
I have one (so far) SFH that goes broody - 2ce this year so far. She'll keep her chicks as long as I let her. She'll let them roost with her when they are older and they come offer her moral support when she is laying. She's one of my best hens, so I took her last chicks away from her at about 8...
Del - please keep records and take photos. Once things settle down and you have done what you can to save the remaining birds, you need to take action on this. In fact, you should probably at least report it right now so the feed store can warn other customers.
Either the feed store or Purina...
Del, thank you for the update! My stomach has been in knots over your flock.
Instead of antibiotics, what about tons of fresh oregano and garlic? Both have such good antibiotic properties. I don't blame you for not wanting to use regular antibiotics.
There are a number of other great herbs...
I'm so worried about Del and her flock it's driving me batty! I just can't imagine... and it's not her fault! Moldy feed can be hard to detect. It is usually an issue with the storage of the feed before it is sold.
I also have a bird with frostbite. She evidently went to bed on the coldest...
Delisha - I've been thinking (worrying) about you and your flock all day. I know you'll post when you can. Just want you to know there are a lot of folks out here pulling for your birds.
Delisha -
I am heart sick, and I am praying like crazy that you are able to save most of your birds!
I am a long-time follower of this thread and I feel like I know you and know your birds.
Huge, BIG hugs and tons and tons of prayers coming to your beautiful flock.
sunnyskes do u have wooden fence posts
if u do u could use those posts
a few ways
anchor the coops u have to the fence posts
or build onto the fence posts
u can make taller supports by putting taller posts against ur fence posts and anchoring them with industrial grade materials and then...
One on left looks like a boy. Hard to tell on other one but all my BCM are Bev Davis lines to and girls had dark combs at that age. But Im no expert so wait for others to say what they think.
Thanks for your input everyone. It is 1 male and 3 girls and they are all 11 weeks old. But they are to dark? That's good to know. Ill post new pictures in a few weeks.
Hi. New to the site and new to marans but not new to chickens. I have some that are 11 weeks old. When do they get there copper feathers? Mine are all black. Do I need 2 worry about some white feather tips on them? Sorry for all the dumb questions.
