One of my Australorps is 32 weeks old, broody and sitting on eggs.
Dominiques are also supposed to be fairly broody, as well as good mothers.
Agreed, I never had my box blocked off, I just shooed them out when they went in, and once they established their roosting positions, there was no problem.
I will say however, that my chickens did'nt accept golfballs as eggs, they just rolled them out of the box, they did accept fake wooden...
dlhunicorn,
I'm not sure if you added to the post you made last night, or if I was just so tired that I missed part of it. However, I just reread it and the information that says that Chick fluff is affected by yolk pigmentation, was quite interesting, and flies in the face of the information...

This has been an interesting thread and I think I have made a couple of good points about the subject.
I would love to see if anyone came up with contradictory information, or any thoughts they might have on what I posted, but I fear that this thread will not continue much longer due to topic...

The pigment that makes egg yolk yellow is a caratonoid called Xanthophyll.
Xanthophyll is used by some chickens as pigmentation but only in their skin, fat etc.. but is not used...
In some areas chicken wire is made alot stronger then in other areas and is comparable to hardware cloth; I don't know how strong the chicken wire in your area is.
Raccoons will tear a cat apart, they are not the same animal.
Racoons are bigger, stronger, and are far more capable of getting...
