Thanks for the input. I went ahead and ordered from countryside and should get my order tomorrow or Friday. From there, I'll have a tag with ingredients for the mill to work on or see about carrying for me or I'll keep ordering online.
I'm trying to eliminate GMO food from my diet. Having laying hens, I am eating a lot of eggs and am using Purina Layena Plus Omega 3 pellets, no hormones or antibiotics but I'm sure its full of genetically modified corn full of round up pesticide. I live out in the sticks and there is a feed...
Of course no project is complete without showing the lovely ladies. Four laying hens - Buttercup a BO, Pepper a Barred Rock, Cinnamon a RIR, and Ginger a NH Red. The first two are my best layers and the other two are the friendlier ones who let me pick them up.
Another view of the coop from the south side. I had some plexiglass cut to fit over the hardware cloth to cover the windows in the coop when the weather gets bad. I also have the whole run and roof areas secured with hardware cloth. I went so far as to continue the hardware cloth down the...
Since I can't figure out how to put more than one photo per post, I'll send a few more. This is the interior of the 5 x 5 house. I found the 'poop board convert' discussion and decided to divide the bottom of the coop by placing a board on the floor which is a sheet of linoleum over the maple...
Just realized that I never posted pictures of the finished product. Have been very happy with how it turned out, both in looks and function. I must credit the Witchata coop for the idea for my design. Had some rough plans but final cuts were calculated as we went so as to minimize ripping any...
I tried a search on how to have a page with my coop and run and this showed up so I will post a few pics here and if anyone can point me in the direction of how to have my coop have its own page (here's the catch) using my iPad, I'd appreciate it. Got many great ideas from the coop pages and...

I found this thread just a few days after bringing home my first ever chickens. We had just finished the coop and run that I designed and me and DH built with left over maple flooring from our home built 15 years ago. It's been stored inside. We had put linoleum over the wood and in...
I love the open design and am putting in lots of hardware cloth for protection and ventilation too. Do you have a problem with rain and snow blowing into the large front window? I noticed you have windows on the top openings. I was going to put a large screened window in the east facing wall...
I'm a soon to be chicken owner in southern Ohio, the hocking hills region. Not quite neighbors, but similar climate. I pretty much ignore some of the things people suggest that will keep you outside the pen or coop due to not wanting to get dirty. I have 3 horses that I have here on the...
Thanks for tips and input all. I know that in a way using the maple is wasteful, but we live way out in the sticks, as in did you know there are places in Ohio with no cell service? That's where we live. Our driveway scares city folk who don't know how to deal with hills and gravel. We do...
Thanks for the input. We have used tung oil on an outdoor bench made of teak and I like that idea better than Thompson's. I was beginning to think I was nuts for wanting to use the maple since no one was responding. Thought no one wanted to burst my bubble:)

Stopped in town at Sherman Williams and started talking to him about what we were planning on doing and he laughed as he is doing the same thing with a buyout assorted bird's eye maple flooring when a small local mill closed. He suggested just using Thompson water sealer which will let is...
Looks good, keep sending pictures. We are just about ready to dig the holes for the 4 x 4's, but not sure the ground is thawed enough as it has been below normal temps until yesterday to 60's and today it hit 70 in Ohio.
I'm designing a 5X5 raised coop with a 5X6 attached run. I've gotten great ideas for the design, windows etc, but our biggest question is how to use the probably 1000 square feet of extra tongue and groove solid bird's eye maple left over flooring that we bought 13 years ago at a very very good...
