I have four RIR chickens and have three of them laying. They are all 7 months old, and I am wondering if this one is a rooster. Please help!
I can upload more pictures if you need them. She/He makes loud noises sometimes.
This isn't a definate indicator but when their crowns start getting bigger and redder, then they are becoming mature and they will lay soon. (Soon as in maybe a couple months or less)
I thought it would be cool if someone joined me to discuss first eggs. I am new to BYC and to chickens and thought it would be fun. On this Thread you can:
Discuss problems about your chickens
Discuss first eggs
Post pictures
Have fun
And anything else that you are stressed with your chickens...
On Thursday I got my first egg! I am so happy. They are 20 week old RIR hens. I got another one yesterday (Saturday). They are pretty small and they are the first eggs ever from these hens, do you think you can eat them? I am worrying because they have been sitting in my fridge.

I sometimes live in an area that doesn't allow chickens either. I kept my chickens in my basement for 3 months since they were babies and it was below freezing outside. I have four. They are very stinky, and I had to clean their coop in the basement every week (sometimes in the middle of the...
