So far 6 of the 7 have hatched. I know I butchered silkie mamma's head puff trimming around her eyes.
When do I need to make sure that the chicks are eating?
I went to change her water and food to chick starter and 4 little fuzzy heads popped up. Can't believe so many hatched on day 20. Am I counting wrong? I set the eggs on 3/1/13 at 6pm. Isn't today day 20?
Chickens are such amazing animals. The eggs had all been in the fridge before I decide to throw them under the broody. I can't wait to see how many hatched and what they will grow up into.
Do you guys think one of the chicks hatched early on day 20? This morning I saw half and empty shell next to the broody. I don't see a baby chick and I'm too afraid to move the broody. She makes all sorts of disgruntled noises when I get near.
I have 4 more day, can hardly wait. I was too nervous to candle after day 10, so I hope no eggs explode on me. The broody is a silkie so hopefully she will be a good mommy. So excited! Who would have ever thought that raising chickens is so addictive. It's like crack.:D
Mine started at 20 weeks and the rest followed a couple of days later. They lay daily for about 20 days then break for one and star again. abstiNence big eggs too.
Hmm...that does seem weird.
I had one very friendly chicken go skittish on me because she got attacked by a hawk. Before the attack she would jump on the bench and sunbath next to me whenever I sat down, but after the attack she wouldn't jump on my lap or let me pick her up. I think she...
Hi all, just found this thread and love it. Spent the last 3 hours reading it, lol. I have a newbie question. I have my first broody setting on eggs to hatch 3/22. My flock is about 7 months old and free range a few hours each day. The broody is separated in a large dog crate. My question is...
After doing a little research on this forum, it seems I might be able to use Eprinex for lice, mites and worms. Does anyone know if I am using it as a prophylactic do I only need to give one dose every 6 months?
What should I use as preventitive dewormer for my chickens and also what should I use to prevent lice or mites? I don't eat the chickens so a chemical based product is okay with me. I am a bit skeptical that natural remedies will work. I live in Southern California, so the soil is usually dry...
Have you guys checked out Los Angeles Urban Chicken Enthusiasts on meetup.com? They seem to have meetups on changing chicken ordinances in Southern California.
I want to rehome 4 guinea fowls to a good home. They are very good for insect control and very friendly to humans, dogs and most chickens but 3 of them are aggressive to silkies. One of them even allows me to pick him up and pet him and occasionally jumps on my shoulder. They were born August...
