    B.Y.C. Dorking Club!

So happy to find this thread. I have wanted Dorkings for some time. Finally ordered 5 pullets and a roo this spring. Basically I wanted to raise meat chickens, but some eggs would be nice too. One pullet was found dead one morning in the hen house. Another flew out of the yard and was eaten...

I need advice on dealing with a big fat murderous raccoon!

We use the have a heart traps. Possums go in readily, but coons seem to be smarter. They can get the bait without tripping the trigger. My husband finally caught a fish in our pond and ran fishing line through it's body to attach it to the trap. The coon couldn't leave with it, tripped the...

[LIST - Over 1,000 names!] Chicken names!

We've had many of the usual names already listed here, but my favorite was one our grandaughter gave a Polish topknot roo we had. She took one look at him and said, "He looks just like Elvis". And Elvis it was.

Adding young roosters to older flock

An update in case anyone has a similar question. I let the two younger roos out yesterday. Old Blue immediately showed himself the dominate roo. However he doesn't mind if the other roos mate with the hens, what he seems most interested in is keeping everyone away from his scratch in the...

Adding young roosters to older flock

Could be he is, but I don't think so. My husband isn't able to get around much so sits on the porch and pretty well knows what is going on. He says he does the "little dance", the hen walks off and he doesn't pursue her. I will check the fertile egg tho, I just watched a video on how to do...

Adding young roosters to older flock

I have 20 hens, ages 4 years to one year. I lost my dominant rooster and am left with a big fat 4 yr. old blue wyandotte. All he does is display outside the pen with my two 9 month old roos. It is getting close to time to hatch chicks, and he is not doing his job. If I put the two young roos...

    If you have a dog.....

I have a Jack Russell. He made one "mistake" when we first got the chicks. We corrected him and there have been no other incidents. He kills snakes, possums, and foxes so is really a big help in protecting my 20 hens and 2 roos.

    Salmonella outbreak

I hope I am not changing this thread too much. I just read an article about the causes of salmonella in eggs. One cause it mentioned was fecal material getting on the egg in the nest. If you raise chickens in the yard you know this happens from time to time. One is also told not to wash and...

    Baby chicks

I have a friend whose hens will not set. I set some eggs for him with a good reliable mother of mine. He wants to take the chicks at about two weeks. I am worried it may bother the mother hen. I thought a month would be better. Any ideas?

    Hatching eggs under a hen

I imagine what happened is she got off to eat and another hen took the nest. She in turn took the nest beside it. That happened last time, but I watched her closely and managed the nests.

    Hatching eggs under a hen

I put 10 fairly large eggs under a year old buff orpington who is broody last evening. Everything was fine this morning. I had to be away until this afternoon. Checked her and found her on another nest. The eggs under her were good and warm, the eggs on the nest she was on previously were...

    Broken joint

I had a 5 mo. rooster who broke his leg at the joint. It just dangled. He hopped around on one leg. I read all the suggestions, splint, put him out of his misery, etc. I put him in a large cage with food, water and straw. For about a week he just lay around, eating a little. After a week, I...

My 55 new chicks arrived today! ALL DEAD

I ordered from Ideal last March, the 12th. I believe. They arrived here in La. in two days, no problems. My post office called first thing in the morning and I picked them up. They did substitute five for a breed I ordered, but I did not think to say "no substitutions". Out of 35 I lost two...
