Thanks for your responses. My girls really liked it and I think I will continue to feed them it. Cute chick pic. and I really like the magazine backyard poultry. That is where I read the article on natural dewormer.
I have never had to feed oyster shells. My eggs are perfect. I give them several hours of free range each day. The feed I buy is from Family Farm and Home. It is Naurto(sp?) 16% protein, $7.99 for 40lbs. If you notice soft shells on several occasions, then consider the oyster shells but I think...
At 20 weeks I switched to layer pellets and within a few weeks I got eggs! I have had no problems since. They do not need any medicated stuff, just layer pellets.
Has anyone tried feeding chickens pumpkin as a dewormer?
I read it is a natural dewormer. Mine do not have worms but I thought I would give them one as a way to be proactive. If you have tried this did it work??
You could try adding light to the early am hours and have the timer go off when the sun rises. Also make sure you are feeding them laying ration. As soon as I did this, within weeks I was getting eggs. My timer goes on at 4am and off at 8:30am, the sun rises here at 8:05 for now)
Thanks for your responses. I have a 13 watt CFL light bulb inside my brooder lamp and I just clamped it to the ceiling. A timer goes on at 4am and off at 8am. All my hens are laying and usually done by 10 am or sooner!! Awesome!
So if the sunsets at 8pm and rises at 7am, Do I turn the light on at 8pm and run it until 7am? I quess I am confused. Is that too much light during the night?
I have been using dried grass clippings from my yard. I have had no problems. The yard gets brush-hogged so it is long and when it dries I put in a pile and the chickens make it into a nest.
I am wondering what kind of light I should install in my coop. I live in Michigan and the days are getting shorter. My 5 chickens are laying everyday and I would like it to stay that way. I do have electric in the coop. also how long should I leave it on?
I am also feeding the Purina Mills starter/grower. I did buy a bag of Chick grit and sprinkle it lightly on their food. They are not outside yet. Do you feed the medicated stuff? and is it safe to feed it until they are 18 weeks like the package says?
Hi all. I am feeding my new chicks Purina Mills start and grow medicated feed 18% protein. On the package it says to feed until 18 weeks.
Does anyone else use this feed? and is it safe to feed the medicated starter/grower for that amount of time. I am assuming the feed company knows what they...
My chicks are 2 weeeks old. It does seem to have gotten better. They are in a brooder so they have not been outside. ( until today for an hour) I think it may have been the food. Are all chicks born with worms like kittens or puppies?
I am a new chick owner. Their poop looks like it has worms in it. Small yellow ones. I am feeding them Purina Mills Medicated starter/grower and baby grit. Do I need to deworm them? and what do I use?
