I had an americauna hen go missing and finally found her nest outside in my terracing. She had layed 13 eggs!! We now have 11 little americauna chicks. I had had broodys hatch out 11 prior so I was done with chicks for this year, but I guess she had other plans!!
Okay, my opinion would be that it's a pullet. I have a little 9 week Ameraucana that has a larger, redder comb than that one and the colors just don't fit a cockerel. JMO!! ;)
That is funny that you just updated because I was going to say they all looked like cockerels until I saw the date and then read to the end to see every one elses opinions. :) Sorry they all ended up being boys.
BTW...I was basing my decision on the fact that they all appeared to have down...
Yesterday my Buff Brahma Bantam attacked her almost 2 week old chick. She hatched this chick out but I noticed that whenever the baby would start peeping she would freak out and act like her baby was a predator. For the most part she was a really good momma except when baby started peeping...
I currently have 3 mommas with chicks, 2 sitting on eggs and 7 more broody! I'm done with babies after the ones hatch. I need to break some broodys as they are taking up the majority of my nest boxes.
My mommas have their chicks with the rest of the flock and the other hens are awesome with...
I have 3 chicks that have hatched this morning, 3 eggs pipped, and 2 eggs still hanging in there. I'm incubating under a broody hen and we weren't due until tomorrow so, pleasant surprise for me this morning!! :)
If I would have known yesterday what I know today, I would have helped it out. This morning it was shrink wrapped but had pipped through the membrane. Unfortunately it was dead. The other chick was also pipped through the membrane and was also shrink wrapped so I just pulled the membrane back...
No one has had experience with this!?! I just checked and the chick that's in the shell that is the most crushed is still alive but the membrane is starting to shrink in. It appears that the hen must be crushing it more because it's really broken now. I know I should just let nature run its...
We are on day 19. I guess I was just worried about the membrane drying out??? It looks like there is another egg that is cracked, although not as bad, and I can also hear the chick in it, too. Hopefully that one will just get it a little easier when it pips. :)
I was just out in the coop checking on my broody's and one of the hens has an egg under her that appears to have been stepped on by her. The membrane is not broken and I can hear the baby cheeping inside. What do I do????
Some broody's are just homicidal. I wouldn't let that hen hatch out any eggs again because chances are very good that she'll kill the babies again. I have 2 broody's right now and they are in my nest boxes in the main coop. I just set a rabbit hutch on the bottom nest box and a pet carrier on...
WooHoo! One of my eggs hatched this morning, and another one is peeping. I'm pretty sure that the 3rd one is no good. My hen is being such a good little momma! Anxiously awaiting the pip of the 2nd egg.
I hope I have another hen or 2 go broody soon because I'm going to try and set a...
She does leave the nest and comes out into the rabbit hutch to eat and drink. It's a fairly large hutch. I hope they do hatch as it will be my first batch from my own chickens. :)
I have a broody hen that has been sitting on 4 eggs, originally had 6 but 2 of them were clearly clear. She is in one of the nest boxes so the other hens kept laying in there. I was afraid to move her because I was afraid she would abandon the eggs. Anyway, long story short...one of the eggs...
So if I can't see or feel the egg near the vent is it possible that she is an internal layer? I had another of my RIR's do this same thing earlier this spring but I couldn't get her to pass it so I just put her back out into the coop after a couple of days because I figured that she would more...
We just had to cull a hen this morning because of her being egg bound and tonight I have another one. She just started acting strange tonight and when I picked her up I can feel 2 very hard lumps in her abdomen. What do I do or is it even possible to get them to pass 2 eggs? I currently have...
