I know that using a black rooster over a legbar hen will result in auto sexing at hatch.
I currently have a BCM roo for my OE pen, but my back-up boy is a Wheaten Marans.
Since the male Wheatens feather out black, does that still work for creating an auto-sexing offspring? Or NO because of...
12 weeks on Friday. No crowing and zero wattle/comb growth or coloration (my other polishof the same age started growing his bright red wattles/comb weeks ago).
I am wanting to lean toward pullet but some of the feathers are throwing me off. Opinions?
(New Pic #1)
So this was the last chick to hatch -- 24+ hours after she started zipping. I ended up assisting because she just stopped trying and I was concerned.
She (d'Anvers bantam) came out weak and had a bit of shrink wrapping. And, she had a ton of green gunk at the bottom of her shell (and stuck to...
15 of our 18 eggs hatched yesterday. Of the three left, I thought only one had pipped -- I just pulled out the oldest and completely dry babies because it was getting crazy in there and a bantam egg was getting knocked around like crazy.
I discovered one of the eggs that I thought had NOT...
I have searched trying to see if there has been a similar topic posted but haven't found anything.
So, lockdown question -- earlier today, I added more water to my Hovabator Genesis to up the humidity (used a straw and went through the vent opening) --- I just shined a flashlight in there to...
I obsessively stare at these two, TRYING to figure out anything about them. Their behavior goes back and forth between cocky boy stuff and timid girl stuff. Crests are confusing and, in the case of the frizzle, I can't tell if her/his neck feathers are rounded or pointed. Everyone is still...
1st time incubating here ... I put them in on Saturday, and OH. MY. WORD., each day is going by so S-L-O-W-L-Y.
This is going to be the longest 21 days EVAH!!!!!!!!!!!
Picked up two new chicks from someone in my area -- Lavendar Orpington and a Rumpless Aracauna mix.
She said they were 8 weeks .... now that they are out of the box and in my brooder, I am seeing some potential red flags.
The orpington is HUGE -- maybe triple the size of the Aracauna mix...
Sigh .... I just KNEW I'd have all six of my girls laying by Halloween.
So far, the two EEs and my BR are the only ones -- EEs started first. Those three have all be laying over a month (every day too).
But, my RIR, SLW, and SF are taking their sweet time! They show all the signs -- bright...
So, now they are older and in various stages of being fully feathered.
I have 2-3 I'm worried (still) about. Our Salmon Falverolle (who has had a bunch of black come in) ... an Easter Egger (who is starting to get very fancy in her color patterning) ... and a Silver Laced Wyandotte (who has...
Or do I just have a chick that is badly colored? Or .... something else all together?
She's nearly 3 weeks now -- and has so many dark feathers starting to come in (even her chest has red/dark ones starting to poke) .... she's not looking a whole lot like breed pics I've studied.
Also, her...
This is my brother in law's chick -- which we are raising in our coop.
It's a week & 2 days old, and was a feed store purchase -- the feed store gets their chicks from Ideal.
My BIL was told it was a BPR pullet ... but I have my doubts. BUT, since I'm as green at this as he is, I don't know...
Well, two of them ... sigh. We ordered a total of 6 but only the "special breeds" (salmon faverolle and dominique) came today.
And ... dude, trying to photograph baby chicks is hard!!!!
Will introducing the others as they come this month be a bad idea? We are...
I'm new to the world of chickens -- my husband grew up with them out in West Texas, but I was raised on a cattle ranch (OK girl here). We are in the process of researching everything in the hopes of starting in the next month or two with some chicks.
Really excited to start this process!
