So this first hatch of the year is coming to a close and it has been a roller coaster!!! Here in NC a few weeks ago we were enjoying awesome spring weather so I figured what the heck, I'll set some eggs the temperature will be mild enough the incubator won't have to fight too hard right...
Very awesome to see such detailed pics! Should be said that this procedure *is* illegal in some countries as it is considered cruel (like raising overbred chickens to 6 weeks old before slaughter is not). It would be important to check and make sure that you won't be in trouble if it gets out...
Re: your rooster... I have heard that sometimes chicks can have a poor reaction to pine shavings... something about the fumes. I myself use newspaper on the bottom of my brooders.
We wound up resorting to this because I lack an incubator and my Indian Runner Ducks won't go broody (i hear that is an issue with the breed). I just feel really lucky that it worked, and my first time too!
I had heard several different things regarding whether it was possible due to different requirements for humidity and temperature. Well I stuck some of our runner duck eggs under a broody hen and out popped 6 cute ducklings! I don't know how confused she is or if she even cares, but my chickens...
I think she may have spent too much time "up and about" this last month. My 2 year old loves to feed the chickens and tosses out BOSS for them. And of course he got a bunch in the little run that I have set up for her. Its tough to check the eggs each day since her nest is inside a dogloo and...
Yes, chicken eggs, no, I marked it on the calendar. After looking around the website, I noticed that I was way off the number of days to hatch and have pulled the eggs replacing them with new ones from today/yesterday. I hope that she will sit long enough on these. She is definitely broody but...
I set 13 eggs under my broody hen 29 days ago, but what with the heat ect I'm not sure what to expect??? How much longer should I let her sit on these before I replace them with different eggs? Do you think she will stay broody for another 28 days??? She is a generic barred rock bird, she...
If you are just starting with chickens you might consider getting birds or chicks from a local person for two reasons. 1) you know (or can reasonably presume) that the birds are suited to your climate area ect. 2) you can meet and get to know another chicken person for all those questions that...
I got a flock of domineckers (barred birds here in the south) they work great, fend for themselves well and when I let her, the hen that went broody did a great job raising her babies without any intervention by me at all! No problems with egg eating and even my roo is friendly. Even right now...
I thought I had the ugliest chicken in the world the other day when I came out and one of the girls was nearly naked! I figured it was molting since she has feathers growing back in. And I don't blame them for being irritable! With the cold weather we have been having with the ice and snow, it...
Ok, I have what may seem an obvious question. What do you all DO with all those chickies once they arrive? I started out with 20 domineckers with 12 hens and one decided to go broody and hatched a surviving 7 more hens.... kept one rooster, sent the rest to freezer camp. But now, in the middle...
The area I have set aside for them is about 4x4ft "house thingy" with an attached 4x6 area in the dirt outside it. I don't know how long I can keep 9 birds in there...lol.
I am also considering hatching out some other eggs, maybe turkeys and that particular area is really the only area that is...
The mama is what the locals here call a "Dominecker" which is what they call any barred bird apparently...lol The chicks are from the community nest and I don't think she had laid in quite a while by the time I gave up and let her sit on eggs.
3 days? Wow, alot less time than I would have...
Yay! All 9 of the chicks hatched! I went out yesterday morning to collect eggs and they were all running around with mama hovering nearby. Do you all remove the egg shells from the nest afterward or do you let them be? Also, when should I allow the chicks and mama hen back into the general...
Ok, I went out and listened really carefully, the rest of the chickens in the yard were even cooperative and were quiet too, but I can't hear anything.... How long should I wait?
Ok, its day 20 that my chicken has been sitting ever so faithfully on her eggs... I so anxious to find out how many will hatch! I decided not to bother her as she is a first time mom and I want to avoid issues if possible. If she goes much longer, what do you all suggest? How long do I let her...
