I think that's true generally but this shyness can be lessened if you are the sole parents and you play with your ducklings :-) In my little (incubated) flock, all seven of them followed me around the garden as they would a mother duck and when I sat or lay down they'd be all over me, fitting...
I forgot to mention that my seven KC's were incubated by a friend here for me and of course they are brothers and sisters... so they all move around like 'one', you know the look? :-) So don't think there will be a prob. between the two drakes. The prob. was though with the Pekin drake that died...
Carcajou!
Thanks so much for all your great info. and consolidation of advice, Im sure most people around our village think I'm nuts when I launch into a 'duck rave'...the'vey already decided I I'm eccentric when often seen early morn. floating out through the mists here, still in my white...
Hi! BYC great for researching info! Though this is an old post very relevant to me now, I have a 2 - 3 month old duck or drake, dont really know yet and is a cross between a Pekin drake (I think) and a Muscovy hen. Looks identical to one of the images on your link with lots of brown scalloped...
Carcajou, what is generally a good ration for drakes and ducks? I have two drakes and five hens, will there be a prob. With fighting or will they just divvy up the girls lol.
Love seeing them in the snow! Just such a contrast for me in hot hot Aust. I see yours have a little house near the pond, do they go in happily at night?
Congratulations! Khakis are fantastic, so much character, they make me laugh every day. we have a restaurant and I swear they know on Thursdays I come home with all the lettuce trimmings and practically climb in the car to get them! post some pix. of your boy for us when he arrives :)
It's such a subtle difference...and your boy is very handsome! I really like that yellow glow :) Do you show your birds at all? None of my gals are laying yet, that I know of, is it a secret night thing? Just thinking they could be laying and the foxes, magpies etc. snaffling up the eggs before...
I just tried that link but apparently there 'seems to be a problem' It is the link in my gallery album called 'ducks crossing'. Anyway my av. Gives a pretty good indication of the drakes coloring.
Cacajou, the pic in my avatar is one of my drakes and the other photos are at

I have seen some photos of Drakes with a much more muted colour to their beaks. When you say your drake has a yellow beak, can we see more of him? Not that it is important unless your...
lol, they look very 'house and garden' swimming on that pretty pond, but I know too well what happens behind the scenes! I had mine in the laundry until they were three months and things were tense at home with the mess!:) I remember cleaning-up three times a day and spending so much time...
Good to know because we have both extremes here and after seeing yours in the snow I'm less anxious about their first winter coming up, (for us in Aust. June/July lots of frosts).
Backyard Chickens has been a learning curve and I've made loads of mistakes but having fun and figuring things out. Thank you for everyone's feedback so far, really helpful and kind of you all :) Because of apparently having a browser (my iPad) which is not compatible with the 'rich text...
