HELP: Chickens Dying Daily (28 so far)

What should we do with the dead chickens? I don't know what would be best here since coccidiosis can be transferred to insects and other animals (so that would leave out taking them way into the woods and letting nature take it's course) and I don't know if we bury them? One website suggested...

    Incubator help!!

Just put some aluminum foil over the grate to decrease the surface area. That's what I do and it works well.

Introducing new chicks to the coop

I have the same issue. I just leave them be inside the roost, and when they are ready to come outside they will. By that time they may or may not have developed the sense to come back inside. I think they just need to get an idea of their surroundings so they know where to go back to. Even my 10...

First one to hatch last night! I have since had 8 cheeps come out and are now in the brooder. More on the way including some of my mail order BCM's. Wife and kids are as excited as I am. Nice to be able to sustain your own hobby and flock.

Yes you can. I would suggest a smaller LED flashlight as they have a brighter beam. And you can wrap some paper around the end and tape it so that you can set the eggs over the lens. Works very well for darker eggs.

Well today is day 20.... Woke up to 1 pip this morning... barely noticeable, and I heard a little cheep as well. Came home from work and have 2 more pips aside from the first one. Had to help the first one out a bit, he hadn't made any progress since this morning so I poked a little bit of shell...

A quick question for everybody.... Does anybody here ever leave a light source on near their bators around hatch time? Just wondering if it helps a chick to see its way out or if they are fine without any light at all? I have my bator in the basement because the temperature and humidity are...

On day 19 now and holding steady at 65% humidity after going into lockdn yesterday. Really looking forward to a few pips or rocks possibly tommorow after work :) Have some very healthy BCM eggs as well as some SLW and SLW/ BR cross. My last batch was a total disaster... all dead. I have a good...

Loving this rain.... Just had my Vegetable garden tilled and I am afraid of having another drought year... But this rain really helps ease that fear. Anyways, just started free ranging this week and the chickens absolutely love taking their dust baths in the fresh dirt and sun. Gonna be a pain...

    Black Copper Marans discussion thread

If your new to chickens, I'd say you made a real good choice with the Marans! I had always wanted the BCM's and finaly bought some on Ebay a while back. Set to hatch on 12 april. Good luck with your chicks. Be patient as I hear that Marans can take a while to start laying compared to other breeds.

I would really try to wait until day 10... But I can't talk. I've only made it to day 9 after a couple of batches lol. The only problem I see with candling early is that you may not be able to see anything. Even on day 10, you may still have some eggs that are questionable or that you will have...

Unhappy with the quality of my eggs

I feel like I should have known that lol.... I will have to try the cooking methods described and find out what works best. I am going to be selling eggs to friends in the future after my other hens mature, and I would need to tell them a proper method for hardboiling. Thanks!

Unhappy with the quality of my eggs

Don't know if this is the right place to be asking this, but it makes them most sense to ask under "managing your flock", so here it goes. I have a few SLW and BR, and they are laying decent enough, and I have plenty that are fertilized too and I incubate when I can. My problem is eating them...

My chickens have become a niusance

I'd like to think that most people wouldn't eat Phoenix's... Being that they are mostly valued for there looks and for showing or decoration. Im sure there is somebody on here near you that would take them. Try the For Sale/ Wanted forum. Just a question, do you leave the light on at night when...

This weather is downright DUMB. I have some 6 week olds that I want to put outside into the main coop with the adults but, I dont know if I should worry about the freezing nights that we seem to still be having? They are fully feathered... Anybody know if they will be alright?
