33 week old easter egger has not started laying

Hello, I have a small beginner flock of 6 hens. All had started laying quite a while ago except for one Easter Egger. They were all born on the same day and have been together since the beginning. She is not even squatting yet. She is definitely not a rooster. They are confined to a run so...

should I continue to rearrange chickens on perch so Lilly can get the spot she wants?

I have six chickens, 18 weeks old. They have been roosting for quite a long time now. I end up going out to the coop after they have all settled in to be sure everyone is up on the roost. There is usually one particular chicken that is not on the roost, but standing on the poop board instead...

burying hardware cloth apron when there are stumps, roots and an embankment

We have dug a foot wide, probably 3 foot deep trench around our unfinished chicken run and have begun to install the hardware cloth to the bottom outside of the run and formed an apron around the perimeter. Two sides of the run will be easy, it is flat and no roots or stumps, the other two...

afraid to open windows at night in coop and it's getting hot

I have had my 7 week old babies in their coop for a week. The nighttime temps have been quite cool so each night I go out and close their windows and lock them in all snug for the night. Well, tonight I think it would more comfortable if I kept the windows open, because it is warmer, but I am...

using stakes and poultry netting for supervised free ranging?

I feel like I just came up with a genious idea, but I want to get everyone's okay before I do it! I will not be doing any free ranging that isn't protected because we have preditors. I am not too worried about attacks from the ground since I will be right next to them gardening or sitting in...

Building chicken run, want to clarify wire choices b4 I start

I am building my chicken run. I am planning on making an 18 inch, 19 guage galvanized hardware cloth apron, 1/2 inch, and running the same cloth on the bottom 3 feet of the run. I would like to use a sturdy but less expensive material for the top 3 feet of the wall and the ceiling area. What...

I have two buff orps that are 12 days old. Chick one is larger, feathering beautifully, tail and wing feathers, active, size and feathering and activity level the same as her RIR and Easter Egger sisters; chick two has always been smaller, little bigger than half chick one's size, still looks...

can baby chicks eat regular chicken grit?

I went to the store to buy chick grit today and they looked at me like I was crazy and said that they had chicken grit, but not a grit specific for chicks. I came home with one pound of chicken grit in a ziploc baggie for 50 cents. Can I feed this to my ten day old chicks or should I maybe...

bringing 10 day old chicks outside for a little while???

Today is 80, a little breezy. I have 10 day old chicks. Would it be ok for me to put them in a bottomless crate and bring them out on the lawn for a little while? How long? I was thinking like 15 minutes. Or is it best to leave them in their brooder until they are a bit older? Side note...

getting baby chicks used to handling

I have six new chicks that are six days old. I want friendly adult chickens. As adults, I would like for them to come running to me, let me pet them, maybe sit with me a few minutes. I have heard over and over to handle them all the time. They get very nervous if I just reach into the...

Putting 3 week old chicks in the coop with heat lamp

My babies are no where near three weeks old but I like to think ahead, so here goes. I was looking to put my chicks in their coop at about 3 weeks of age with a heat lamp to get them out of the house. I live in Mass and our average daily lows for May is 50 ( this would be at night). I have...

I have six 2 day old chicks in brooder with red heat lamp. Plenty of room. My runt, who was lethargic when she got here yesterday but who is doing great today has a scab on her back. I am assuming she was being pecked. I just saw a chick curiously pecking at it. Since she is a runt and I...

Abutting planter boxes against run for predator protection

I came up with the idea of building 12 inch wide planter boxes to run along the outside bottom of my chicken run that I can plant various chicken treats, flowers, rather than burrying 18 inches of hardware cloth. Thoughts?? Would you still bury some cloth extending out from the planters?
