Thank you both so much! I have never thought of sand in the nest boxes but it certainly makes sense. I will check my local feed store for permethrin dust on monday.

Hens infested with bird lice, looking for best approach

We have been trying to "naturally" fight lice for a long time and have had no luck abolishing them. We have tried DE and organic virgin coconut oil mainly. I dont treat in the winter with ovco and this pic shows the worst off bird right now. I am considering sevin but given the fact that it is...

Sound of Silence 6am - No More Crowing

I tried this just now in an attempt to quiet my rooster and the first thing he did after shaking his head about 5 times was to crow nice and loud... oh well. Guess I will keep looking for a good home for him.

Terminix to kill wasps ok around chickens?

I searched the site and could not find an answer for this. We just killed several wasp/yellow jacket nests with Terminix. We got it because it is "organic/natural." The ingredients are: Geraniol [106-24-1], White mineral oil, 2-propanol, vanillin, triethyl citrate, isopropyl myristate...

Treating Lice and bacterial respiratory infection together

A week and a half ago I knew I had a few sick chickens but not that at least 4 of my 9 hens were, what I now believe to be, deathly ill. Nor did I know that they were all infested with lice. For about 2 days I looked up everything I could about the lice, because that was the first thing I...

2 year old chicken, stopped laying 6 months and now wasting away. I'm clueless.

I don't know if anyone will read this but in case someone is looking for answers to the same problem we did have some resolution. All of the chickens were on antibiotics. Whiteys comb cleared up and she got her energy back and after living in my shower for 2 weeks was reintroduced to the...

    Panting, salivating hen

I don't think over heating is a possibility as it has been pretty cool here lately. it was 67 degrees here today. She isn't holding her wings out like I have seen them do when they are hot. The saliva surprised me. And there is a slight wetness around her nostrils. She is separated from the...

    Panting, salivating hen

I went in to check on my birds a few minutes ago and let them out to wander a bit more before dark and one of them is panting and salivating. the worst part of keeping chickens is watching them suffer while I try to figure out what is wrong. Has anyone had these symptoms in a chicken before...

2 year old chicken, stopped laying 6 months and now wasting away. I'm clueless.

Hello and thanks in advance for reading this! I have had this happen to one other bird before I got this one and never figured out what was wrong with her. There is a back story there that I can explain if it will help solve this problem. Whitey is a leghorn that has always been quite small...

    Hello from Inland Nortwest

I am a new member but have been pulling up the site now and then for information for a couple years. I am a full time student as well so I do not expect to be on here very much at all. I do appreciate all of the wisdom and knowledge I have seen on this site and am glad to be able to have access...

spots on comb--- should I worry????

How long did this take to clear up? Mine has had spots just like this on her comb for months (at least through the winter maybe longer) and it gets bigger not smaller. Another one of my girls has it too, now. At least I know why the first one stopped laying.
