Congratulations! I saw this thread a little late, but will answer anyway in case anyone has this happen to them. I had a candler on top of my incubator which unceremoniously rolled off and smashed the top of an egg (chicken) that was about fourteen days along. We are not talking crack here...
Hi,
I am finding myself with an abundance of turkey and chicken feathers that are badly in need of a creative home. I really like wome of the wreaths I've seen, but surely there are some other great ideas out there. Please--do tell--what do you do with them? I would love to see pictures of...
Ask and you shall receive! Well, almost--I can't figure out how to upload a photo or two. I'm feeling rather computer illiterate today. But thanks anyway for the great photos, all.
My Australorp was great! I wish I could clone her--
I snuck five chicks under her at night, and the next morning she had accidentally (I assume) squished one; but was mothering the other four. Not want a repeat performance of the squish, I took the remaining three during the day and placed...
Ravens are incredibly intelligent and fascinating birds. That being said, I have found it difficult to appreciate them when early on I lost a few chicks (never an adult bird). Still--if they must be killed, *please* do it in a quick, painless fashion, not but slowing starving them to death...
Once new chickens are settled in, I take my dogs into the pen one by one (on leash or closely observed--depending upon the dog). I sit and feed the chickens and pet the dog, with firm "no's" if there is a sign of treating the bird like prey. This is my way of letting my dogs know that the...
Oh! I'm sorry, I didn't notice the 90 deg. part. Yes, it is way too hot for turkeys. I have five (about a month old) that are outside now, with a 100 watt bulb. Temperatures are 55 deg. at night, but they are in a coop with five chicks and they all stay under the bulb at night. During the...
I just saw your photo and it is not the spraddle leg that I am used to. The leg needs to go back to normal position, but only very carefully--something serious is going on in there!
When I have had spraddle leg, it has been in new borns or shortly after birth, your baby is much older, so I wonder if he has slipped and strained something (?) or has a neurological problem. For the young ones, there are several remedies. You can make a splint holding his legs in the proper...
Dylan, this may not work for you but with younger turkeys I have shredded lettuce and spinach for them to eat. Eating is likely not their only problem (or rather, not eating), but if you can't get them eating you won't have time to figure out what the real issue is.
Can you tell us a bit more...
Loved the gull thread! I had a turkey sitting on chicken nests at random, often with an adult hen tucked under her wing. She actually hatched a few chicken eggs, but apparently squashed them. I was afraid that the goose might do the same with ducklings.
I have now candled five of the eggs...
Thanks--I will likely gradually trade goose eggs for duck eggs gradually. I have dealt with broody hens before, but not a goose--and I simply don't want her to be alone after the loss of her gander.
Thank you for your response--and I suppose the bottom line is I have nothing to lose by trying (except the duck eggs, of course). Right now my primary concern is for her, though.
I have a goose that has been setting her eleven eggs for 29 days now. There is no sign of hatching, although I haven't candled them. This poor girl lost her gander to a predator several weeks ago, and I hate that she will not have babies to keep her company.
I've got some duck eggs in the...
