New at this reply process, too. I hit multiple, but got just your reply, Fly SammyJ. I'll get it figured out...eventually...

    Golden Laced Wyandotte Thread!

Mine are from Cackle Hatchery. They looked very much like yours at that age, Ampho. Mostly black with little color. A couple had white tipped feathers for a while. They are nearly six months old and looking very much like I expected a GLW to look. I don't know what a show quality GLW *should*...

    Golden Laced Wyandotte Thread!

Thank you, GSPx2 and Freeholder. I have 3 Golden Comets I received at the same time as the GLWs (also from a hatchery) who will all be 6 months old next week. One of the GCs started laying 3 weeks ago and one last week. I had another start laying a couple of days ago and was pretty sure it was...

    Golden Laced Wyandotte Thread!

Quick question: How old are GLWs when they start laying eggs? I have 5 that will be 6 months old Dec. 10th. I'm not in a hurry, just want to know.

    3 day old bully. HELP!

Aggiemae: Thank you for the three day tip. I received 10, 2 day old chicks this morning. So far so good. They settled right in and i am enjoying them so much. I have 2 two month olds in the coop outside and have been considering ways to put them together. When the time comes, I'll keep this post...

    3 day old bully. HELP!

See, that's why I like this forum! Excellent information! These are my first two chickens. I have used white sugar in very small doses for several animals when they got too cold. I wouldn't have thought of honey, as I heard there can be a bacteria in it that is too much for a human baby's...

    3 day old bully. HELP!

I should say I didn't put sugar in their regular waterer, just a little in a small, shallow lid for the two of them once or twice a day. It warms them, but too much, too long can apparently lead to pasty butt and other problems. They are stressed enough those first few days. They do love it...

    3 day old bully. HELP!

I had one similar to that. I only had two chicks, but one would run at and chest butt the other and generally hassle the other. We named him/her Deisel. Heshe was smaller and had less fuzz than the other and had a pecked comb that needed to heal. Turns out the chest butter was trying to get...

    Cochin Thread!!!

They are just amazing, MidsummerNight! I'm so glad I gave in and bought my two! I had 5 Golden Laced Wyandottes and 5 golden Comets ordered to come on June 12th, but these were so cute, and right there...they got me! and I have so enjoyed watching them grow up! Can't wait now for the new babies...

    Cochin Thread!!!

And thank you MidsummerNight! The pics are very helpful. I think I have 2 pullets, but would be fine with a roo or two. Partridge Roos are gorgeous birds, hens are too...plus eggs!

    Cochin Thread!!!

Hi Feathersprings, Here's a couple of pics: If you click on the pictures, you'll get the larger version, which shows them pretty well. The smaller chick (Diesel) has always had less feathers, and just a bit slower in all physical aspects, which is supposed to lean toward a roo. He/she is...

    Cochin Thread!!!

Feathersprings, how old is the Partridge in this picture? I have two that are 7 weeks old and I'm still not sure what gender. No pink in either comb and no sign of wattles, but one is quite a bit bigger than the other even though the same age. The larger one has a very noticeable yellow comb and...

    New Landlord Next Door

Yeah, how did we go from a society that accepted chickens as part of everyday life to this kind of over the top reaction? Good for you, politely standing your ground in the face of that kind of intimidation! Wow! Let us know how it turns out.

how cold is too cold for 6 week old chicks?

I'm planning to have them locked up in their coop for about a week or two. It's well ventilated and will keep them protected. I expect they will get used to it and be liking it by the time the run is complete. Then I'll open the run to them. I hope that works for getting them back in at night...

how cold is too cold for 6 week old chicks?

Thank you all for this post and discussion. I have two 6-7 week old Partridge Cochins. They look so small and I was worried about putting them out in their new coop with temps at 70-80 (ok) in the day and 40s to 50s (not so sure ok) at night. I think they are going to love it out of the brooder...

    Cochin Thread!!!

Just bought my first chicks! I ordered some Golden comets and Golden Laced Wyandottes for mid June, but the local feed store had Partridge Cochins, so cute! I have two pullets, and I'm sure they will get along with the June chicks. They are eating and drinking, chirping away in their new home!

    In AZ thinking chicken

Hi chisandchicks! I used to live in Phx., but moved to Dewey several years ago. Phx is blazing hot! I'm very new at this myself, so maybe we can learn together. We get a good four seasons here, not the hot and hotter down there, but still hits a 100+ several days. A mister sounds like a good...

    In AZ thinking chicken

Hi! I have been considering raising chickens for eggs and pets for a while. My daughter in Wyoming has been trying to raise awareness in her town for months now, but still not able to keep just a few hens in her back yard. I was so surprised to hear some of the dis-information and down right...
