So it's been a week with two hours of light added, I have two chickens coming in and laying their eggs, but out of 25 that's not too good :)
I never thought about the goats eating the eggs???
This weekends project is to fence a smaller area back into the coop and see if the rest will provide...
I
I had a fenced in run INSIDE a fenced in goat pasture. We put new welded wire fence up for the goats and I thought the chickens would enjoy the full access to grass and bugs (producing gealthier eggs) LOL. Joke was on me...they went on strike instead :)
This weekends project will be to...
The thought of daylight did cross my mind (I usually put a light in the coop come winter to make up for it) we are in Central Louisiana.
Besides taking the run fence down there hasn't been any stress in the last 3 weeks, grass and bugs would be new feed to them they haven't had access to...
So I thought I was doing my girls a favor fencing in the pasture for the goats and letting the chickens free range inside the pasture, but since I did I have not gotten a single egg out of them!
I figured okay they are laying somewhere out in the pasture but the kids and I went on an egg hunt...
I can't thank you enough for the knowledge!
Everything is completed. Your post put my mind at ease.
Had it been found in the pasture and I not known who killed it or at what time it had been killed I wouldn't have had any question as to bury it. But wasn't sure what to do in this situation. I...
Thanks you for this detailed response!!!
I put her in a clean garbage bag and packed ice under and on top her, so for that matter she should be good.
Thank you thank you thank you!
I'll definitely let her soak in brine for a few days. That was my biggest concern, not having the blood drained...
My dog killed one of our chickens last night and with putting the kids to bed and my husband away on a trip, I didn't have time to clean the bird (I really don't want to waste the meat) so I put it in a cooler with ice last night.
I want to ask the experts is it still safe to process it today...
I opened up the pasture to them this afternoon. They were SO EXCITED!!
I failed to mention I have over 25 chickens and eggs in the incubator, so buying them "snacks" would get way too expensive. I wouldn't have been buying scratch had I know before now that it was a "Sometime food" :)
With...
So if scratch is just a treat, is there anything wrong with giving them Horse rations that I'm already buying?
I'm trying to cut down on all the different bins of feed I'm collecting with each animal I add to the farm :)
Currently they've eaten their run dry so I give laying mash and scratch so they get enough to eat. I love the occasional dried grasshopper legs I find in the premixed scratch, and I'm sure the hens do too!
Once I switch their location I'm hoping the pasture will take the place of scratch.
I...
I did a google search for scratch recipes and found this old post :)

I'll have to play around and see what my feed store carries.
I hate walking into the coop and seeing all the cracked corn in the dirt, obviously none of my chickens are eating it from the scratch.
Has anyone found an alternative to Chicken Scratch?
I'm wondering if the horse rations I buy for my milking goats would be better, but I don't know if the...
PS: I'm not sure the age of the other eggs, as I had marked the original eggs to hatch and she pushed them all out of the nesting box (she did not like the marks), and the other hens laid new eggs on her from the time I had stopped collecting. It was a mess :) so I separated her and the pile she...
I had this same situation with success. 4 chicks just hatched out April 6th. :)
I ended up taking all the eggs and the broody hen and moved her to her own brooding box, so the other hens stopped laying eggs on her!
Currently I'm wondering if any of the other eggs will hatch as it seems she has...
Well a batch of the Fluffy Orpington Roosters fertilized eggs hatched today so he is officially a rooster not a hen :-)
Is this rooster an Orpington or something different?
