I agree, I have 28 chicks 5 weeks old an I fill there waterer twice a day. You would be better off getting say 4 3 gal waterers that getting one huge one, because they need to be cleaned up at each filling. I think it would be much easier for your mom to handle them that way. Just my thoughts...
I think most any treat that does not require grit to be digested is cool, Yogart, Cottage Cheese, Bread etc. I also think I read on here somewhere that they make a chick grit, but I have not seen it around here.
I started with a 20 lb bag and at 4 1/2 weeks I bought a 50 lb bag. They will surprise you with how fast they grow and how much they eat. I just bout them a 3 lb feeder and I still have to monitor it closely or they will run out same with water I got 3 qt size to start out, but i got a 1 gollon...
I want to start by apologising to everyone on BYC. I did not mean to stir up such a contoversy with my post about my personal animals. This is still the most friendly forum on the net so lets all take a deep breath and give a good sigh to give us time to come back to the people we or more...
I don't know all there is to know about nutrition for animals, but I agree with several statements that have been made in previous posts about feeding the correct balance of nutrients, calories. I catagorically disagree with free feeding dogs and cats horses and even cows. A horse or cow will...
Go home and give that little girl a big loving hug, it is not her fault in the least, as was stated earlier the a plum stressed out from the trip thriugh the mail and some just don't make it. Good luck with the rest!!
I picked up my little fuzzy butts the first part of Feb. so now they are close to 5 weeks old and they are about 10 inches tall and pretty well all feathered out!! I noticed Monday when I went to get them some more feed that I picked up the starter for turkeys and such the first time. It was 24%...
I like the plan you came up with in the end. 220 sq. ft. should be plenty of space. I would make the "sleeping" area 8 X 10 with the nest boxes made into the outside wall, it can be easily insulated in the winter and it wii make it alot easier to gather the eggs. You will need a perch per nest...
I think it will be blatantly obvious, unless he works nights like me........ If it does not appear right in front of my face it does not exist. Anyone who works nights will understand 12 hr shifts 2 on 3 off 3 on 2 off.
I had sort of the same problem, except in my case it was chips in the waterer. I put then on top of two landscape pavers. Problem solved. I am not a fan at all of the feeders like the ones you use. I could invision the same trouble standing in TSC looking at my options. I settled on the trough...
That method will certainly work. I suggest you put them together during the day so you can supervise the reaction of the older hens, you will need to allow for the natural pecking order to form amung them. They should be fine.
How many chickies do you have? Do you have a thermomiter in the brooder? How well insulater is the coop against drafts etc.? In my opinion, if there is enough room for all of the chicks to get under the light and the temp is 90 to 95 degrees they will be fine. Yhey will huddle under the light...
I have Toxoplasmosis which is kin to Histo. Toxo only affect babies intrauterin so I was born with it. It caused scaring the Macula of both eyes, but the right is the worst. I found out later in life why I hate cats, they carry it. Anyway, glad you caught it in time and good advice as well.
