    spots on shells

I'm sorry if this is not the right forum, for this. I notice that many of my hens' eggs have itty bitty dark red spots on the shells. They are usually concentrated on one or both ends of the shells. I usually have to scrub a little with a cloth to get them off, and even then sometimes they...

    Chickens not eating well?

They have free run of my yard/pasture/woods when they are out for those hours. Yes, they are eating some...so maybe they just don't like the new brand of feed as much as they old one. I am getting 2 eggs a day right now (not sure if one isn't laying or if they are alternating days). I'm not...

    Oh...and 3 hens.

    Chickens not eating well?

I'm feeding them layer crumbles that I buy at the local feed store. I give them as much as they can eat, but they aren't eating much. They get out to free range for 3 hours a day. I live in NC. They are definitely not eating more this winter. I don't know what might be wrong or what I...

    Chickens not eating well?

My hens don't seem to be eating well. I do let them out to free range for about 3 hours every evening, but I doubt they are getting much. I did buy a different brand of feed recently but I wouldn't think chickens are picky!? Is it normal for chickens to eat less in the winter? Or could they...

    Getting rid of the rooster...

I never thought of it that way, but that makes perfect sense!! I will say that the kids didn't handle the chicks for long (maybe three weeks or so)...only while they were in the house under the brooder light. Once they went outside, all of that stopped pretty much and it turned into just...

    Getting rid of the rooster...

Yes I know he needs to go. I've just worried about my hens being as safe once he's gone. Even though he's a jerk to us, he's not mean to the hens and he takes his job of looking after them very seriously. The kids stay out of his way and he doesn't bother them as long as they don't approach...

    Getting rid of the rooster...

I should add that one of the things I worry about is whether or not the hens will return to roost on their own without the rooster herding them in. He seems to be very concerned that they return to the coop at night, and I don't want to lose any of them if I can help it.

    Getting rid of the rooster...

I know this is going to sound like a dumb question, but I'm going to ask it anyway because I don't know the answer! I'm new to chicken raising. I got my first chicks in March and they are now 8 months old. I thought I was getting 4 pullets (from a bin at Tractor Supply) but ended up getting...

    What am I?

Thanks for the suggestion! I googled a New Hampshire Red and it certainly is a possibility! My chicken even has the little black speckles along the back of her neck like some I saw in a picture. Additional question: if I got them from a feed store, I assume they came from a hatchery...so...

    What am I?

I purchased 4 chicks from TSC this past March. All four were supposed to be pullets. Two were barred rocks, and two were buff orpingtons. Well, one of my barred rocks is most definitely a rooster! But I'm quite puzzled about this one. S/he doesn't look like a buff orp (judging it against...

What is so "bad" about buying feed store chicks?

I just have to add that while I didn't get exactly what I *thought* I was getting with my chicks from TSC, they were very healthy!! No pasty butt, no problems of any kind. They've been very healthy from the day I brought them home so that's good!

    Buff Orp question

Anyone else have any ideas on breed/sex id of these chicks?

What is so "bad" about buying feed store chicks?

I purchased 4 chicks from a farm store recently. They had a bin of buff orpington pullets and a bin of barred rock pullets. These were the breeds I wanted and I definitely wanted pullets so I got two of each. Turns out: One of the barred rocks is a rooster. One of the buff orpingtons...

    Buff Orp question

I am fairly confident that the one in the first picture is a pullet. Does your buff orp source ship small orders?

    Buff Orp question

Any other opinions about there about the actual breed and sex of my mystery TSC chicken?!

    Buff Orp question

Ugh! Keltara, do you at least think she is, in fact, a she? Although I wanted buff orps, I can live with something else as long as it's not a roo! I already got a surprise roo from Tractor Supply. :-( The last thing I need is another one!!

How to teach them where to go to bed!?

I'm ready to transition mine to the coop full time. I've been leaving them out later and later. Went out to pick them up in the dark a few minutes ago and they were huddled up in a corner of the run acting very cold. They have a nice cozy coop...they go in and out all the time, but don't seem...

    Buff Orp question

Showing this one for comparison purposes. Confident that I have a buff orpington pullet here. Not so confident about this one!! ACK! Notice how different they are?! And they came from the same "buff orpington pullet" tub at TSC! See those dark places on the feathers? I've not seen...

    Buff Orp question

Thanks for posting that link! Great pictures, btw!! Those pictures set my mind to ease with regard to the combs...I noticed that at 5-6 weeks, your girls had different looking combs from one another...some were larger than others. But, I'm still wondering about the dark beak and the dark...
