    Rubber egg questions

I have 22 week old golden buffs and they have been laying since 15 weeks. They have laid a few rubber eggs here and there but for the most part the eggs have been normal. I know they do this a lot when they are young but I have some questions. #1 - How long should I expect them to do this...

    Chicken Nipples

I went to my local feed store to get mine (Shipping costs were too high on the internet) and they only had one kind. :o/ I think my husband is going to rig up something with PVC pipe (Like yours) with the cups. Do you have any problems with AVC making the nipples bad?

    Chicken Nipples

I have been watering my chickens with a two gallon water. I made a 5 gallon bucket with chicken nipples underneath that hangs from the top of the coop. I cannot get them to drink out of it. I have even put peanut butter on the nipples to get the girls interested in it and it didn't work. Any...

What's the youngest age that hens start laying???

My Golden Buffs (which are similar to the red stars) started laying at 15 weeks. I was expecting 17 weeks or later but one surprised me. Now they are 20 weeks and I get about three a day. The one chicken that started it all was squatting a week before. Her comb was the biggest and bright red. I...

    Newbie that is becoming obsessed

I think I may need an intervention. I have been wanting chickens for over ten years. But we lived in a subdivision that did not allow chickens. I dreamed of having a small piece of land for my horses where I could raise chickens for eggs. Last year my husband and I found a perfect piece of land...

Any one want to join me in waiting for eggs, posting and comparing notes?

This is my leghorn that just started to lay. We have gotten one white egg from her. She is 19 weeks old. Such a pretty girl.

    Free ranging and laying...

Sixteen eggs!!! Wow they were busy. I wish I could get under those bushes. I have a feeling I will find a nice nest. But its too dense and too many spiders. Smart girls they know my weakness. Well they have to stay in the coop until we get that fox. Poor things are very upset about it.

    Free ranging and laying...

I think one or two return to the nest but the others I think would be happy to live under the bushes in the front yard forever.

    Free ranging and laying...

Okay so due to fox sightings lately the girls have been left in the coop all day. And because of that I seem to be getting more eggs. (2-3 a day) I think they have been laying under the bushes in the front yard but I cannot get in there to check. So my question is... Should I leave them in the...

    Fixing nesting boxes

I have 17 week old golden buffs and two have been laying for a week now. They are using the nesting box but its really small (10" width). It was apart of the coop when i bought it. I would like to widen it for them but I'm afraid to mess up the laying mojo. When I see them sitting in it they...

    Free ranging and laying...

Question... My golden buffs just started laying. I have been finding at least one egg everyday in the nesting box. I'm not sure how many of them are laying (I have 5) and how often they lay this early. I free range them during the day and I'm concerned if they are laying they will not use the...

    Golden Buff Sex link

One of my 15 week old Golden buffs laid an egg yesterday! I was not expecting them to lay so early. I'm just transitioning them over to the layer feed from their chick feed. I have been free ranging them during the day and was wondering should I be looking for eggs around the yard? Do they...

    Dogs

Thank you all so much! this is all great information. Because my girls (dogs) were trained for hunting competitions the e-collar was use as a "force fetch" tool. So I think a long leash or line with a pinch collar would work the best. I'm now excited to train them. I love the idea of having the...

    Golden Buff Sex link

I got them from a hatchery. I sure hope it's not a rooster. I will have to get rid of it. My neighbors will not be happy. Plus I'm looking forward to having plenty of eggs for my family. They were all the same color as chicks and they all have the same red coloring now. I'm hoping she is just...

    Dogs

I have two black labs (hunting dogs) and an English Bulldog. Has anyone ever trained their dogs not to mess with the chickens? My Labs are VERY trainable and my husband is convinced he can teach them not to bother the chickens. I'm just not sure and I don't want to lose any of them. Now my...

    Golden Buff Sex link

First picture is the one I'm worried about the second picture is just a comparison of what the others look like. Her comb is almost as big as my brown leghorn pullet. I know the leghorn hens tend to have large combs. If yours started laying at 17 weeks should I start giving them oyster shells in...
