    % of wheat?

I give my hens and chicks free choice with whole wheat berries and their grower or layer pellets. Even in winter when they can't find bugs and grass their yolks are never a pale yellow. Since I have chickens of all ages together because of broodies with their hatches mixed in with the layers...

Gaining & Maintaining Weight in Harsh Climate

I also live up here in Alberta ne of Edmonton so I know exactly the winter conditions you're going to experience. First of all, I open the coop door and my chickens are outside during the day all winter except for during blizzards. I have now and have had australorps, ameraucanas, marans...

    Quail babies tucking their heads

This is my first time with baby quail and 25/36 hatched from eggs I bought at an auction. There are a couple that seemed healthy when I took them out of the bator, but last night one started chirping loudly and had it's head tucked down under it's breast and kept walking backwards. This morning...

    Chic Chicks Page

I had chickens around from the time I was a child growing up on a farm in the 60's until 1990. A couple of years ago I got a small flock again, and then started reading about some of the different breeds and now I'm hooked. I gave away my leghorns except for a couple of ameraucanaX leghorns...

    Run Size for 10 birds?

Quote: A first year hens' laying abilities are one egg about every 24 - 26 hours so you'll only get 1 egg per day from each hen in the first year, and after the first year some breeds cut down drastically on egg production

I made a outdoor Clay Oven

Last year I decided I needed to have a clay oven to keep the heat out of the kitchen during the summer so this year I went ahead and built one. I started out by building a portable waist high stand for the oven. This is not recommended because the clay is so heavy a permanent base made out of...

can I get a clear answer? how long to toss eggs after using Duramycin?

You don't have to toss the eggs - just cook them up and feed them to the cats or dogs or pigs.

I hate doing this! - Taking hatching eggs from a broody.

I've got a broody that has sat on a previous clutch and started pecking the babies as soon as they hatched so I took them away from her and gave her another clutch to sit on. She's the perfect broody..... gets off the nest a couple times a day to eat/poop and has maintained her health and...

    Where's my eggs???

Maybe you are giving them too many treats and lowering their protein intake. Maybe they have a secret nest somewhere in the grass. Or maybe you have some egg eaters......

All four chickens in the nest box at once?!?!

I took out the partitions in the one set of nest boxes and hung a curtain so they would be darker (and as a precaution so they won't eat the eggs). They still have their favorite spot but the latecomers will just squat next to the first one, and so on and there is no suffocating or squabbling...

Help! Abandoned egg hatched in compost heap!

Congrats on the 6 that made it, and sorry about the one that didn't. Maybe we all should remember that some eggs are late hatchers and not give up on them right away. Also....a compost heap is hot inside and it made me think of turtles that bury the eggs and let them hatch themselves.

Cost of buying a homemade styrofoam incubator?

How long will my silkie sit on these eggs?

Thats great! I hope you find the original 8 eggs have all hatched when you check under her! It won't bother her if you check under her right now, but it might make her abandon the nest if you move her now.

Eggs out of incubator and under broody?

Just keep a close watch so that she doesn't try to kill all of them! I have a broody hen that is great for sitting on a clutch, but as soon as a chick hatches and she sees it she tries to kill it. Great broody instinct but no mothering instinct at all so this is the second hatch I've taken away...

Why is it we have such bad luck with our hens sitting on eggs? *UPDATE

Hi and Sometimes it's the rooster that isn't breeding all the hens - they do have their favorites and seem to be predjudiced also, so you have to crack open some of the eggs to check and make sure they are in fact fertilized. Then if the flock is lacking something in their feed requirements...

Managing/Encouraging broody hens with a "Broody Box" ***Hatching Pics!

Good luck to everyone with broodies and with successful hatches! Right now I have a silkie with week old chicks penned off in the "laying" coop, and a broody marans hen on a doz or so eggs that should be hatching any day now. She is in a nest in another corner and the rest of the flock has not...

How long will my silkie sit on these eggs?

Usually they will only sit another day or two after the first chick hatches so hopefully you'll have a few more hatch before she abandons the nest....or she might stay sitting and ignore the other chicks, or even kill them. To try to hatch the others in an incubator is iffy because the ones...

Broody hen abandoned eggs during development, what to do?? Help!

Why were you adding eggs under a broody hen at different times? You put a whole clutch at the same time...they can be laid on different days, up to two weeks, but keep them away from the hen until you have enough to put under her. Mark all the eggs and check every day in case any other hens...
