My Mallard has been setting on a clutch for close to a month now. She was running around in the run today drinking tons of water. I think she's getting ready for lock down. I candled a few eggs a few days ago and found that they were coming along, somewhere around the mid to upper twentieth day...
I'm simply on the look out for a nice rooster that I can add to my flock. My daughter has expressed interest in showing at the local fairs, but we are looking for a start off point and the rooster is the only thing we have omitted up to this point. I am not set on breed yet and will probably add...
I pulled a Wheaten from her shell today. She doesn't appear to be in any pain, and is getting around in the brooder. Not a great first hatch, but I think she will survive.
So far, I still only have the one, and no movement elsewhere. I took a chance and got him out.
He's in the brooder, moving around pretty well, and making plenty of noise. Still crossing my fingers.
We've had the power go out a few times in the last 6 months. Never for any more than 30 minutes, so I was a bit worried about there being no heat source at that point.
They are BCMs and Wheatens, all from Garry Farms in GA (bargain on BYC).
The canning jars are thermal ballast (insulation). I added them to help keep the temp more stable through the day, and it really helped tons. Now I just hope this one is rallying the rest of them to make a break for it.
Pip, and now a zip. This is my first hatch, and everything that could go wrong has so far. The chick is making plenty of noise. I've got my fingers crossed.
