what is the best auto sexing breed?

Personally I couldn't care less for auto sexing breeds, they have obvious merits for commercial hatcheries, but for small flock owner I can not name one reason to keep auto sexing breed besides curiosity. Unless you are going to kill males at birth, or amuse yourself at...

There is not much lately on American Bresse these days, so I decided to respond to this old thread. I was lucky to buy some White Bresse eggs on ebay directly from Greenfire Farms in 2013. Hatched 6 hens and 2 roosters, as of today still have a roo and 4 hens...

Major temperature spike, worth trying to save?

Lesson learned, never depend on digital therm only I do not care how expensive and "accurate" it is. ALWAYS have analog thermometer with it even cheap one cause it will alert you in case of big "spikes". 2$ aquarium thermometer from Walmart works great.

best hatchery to purchase dark cornish?

I,ve been looking for DC for a while and from what I red and researched Cackle Hatchery has the best strain as far as hatcheries go. Unfortunately Cackle did not sell any DK chicks this season (2015). I called them asking why and they would not give straight answer...

    Olandsk Dwarf Chickens

What is the weight of average OD roo/hen? Reading about OD there is some consensus about hatching issues with them like excessive early deaths and significant loses just prior to piping. I wonder if this is genetic or resulting from possible inbreeding since there was...

Comment by 'pascopol' in article 'The Perfect Flock for Me'

Chickens are not pets by design, they are farm animals raised and bred by humans for millenia to supply humans with eggs and meat. If you treat some of your chickens as pets that's OK but seeing chickens totally as substitute for dogs and cats is a sick aberration, since all...

How do I keep raccoons away

Yes coons can easily kill your chickens through chicken wire not by getting in, but by catching their heads and eating their heads and necks, happened to me before I got really smart with them.

How do I keep raccoons away

If you remove a racoon from your environment another one ore two are going to came to your territory. Hiring any services is only temporary solution and a total waste of money. I had racoons killing my hens through 2X4" cage mesh, by grabbing them by necks and...

Peas ran away and now I'm afraid to free-range

Peas need lots of acreage to run, they are curious, easily bored and love to wonder around. I lost a trio once, one peahen was hand raised and very tame, they just walked away one day and never returned. Now I have a peahen, also very tame, she often wanders...

    coturnix crowing

If a coturnix rooster is "too loud" for you folks you can probably not keep any birds, cause ornamental birds like parakeets, love birds, or cockatiels are just as loud or louder than chirping of a coturnix rooster. I can only hear mine when I get closer to my...
