    Ideal Poultry

I' ve had maybe 8 or 9 bantam chick orders from Ideal Poultry in the last five years. The last time I ordered was Aug. 2013, but just got another order yesterday. I could not be happier. Since it was pretty warm all across the Southwest from TX to SoCal, i was able to safely order just 13...

    I hate Long beach ca

Long story short... if you live in a city that isn't backyard chicken friendly, do NOT give up. Get involved in changing your city's code. It took more than 5 years, but thanks to Long Beach Grows and lots of concerned residents, Long Beach changed their codes! With life being busy, i forgot...

Where to buy Organic Chicken Feed?

Wow, no way! Costco now carries organic chicken feed? That would be awesome if the local costcos carried it, but it could be a regional thing for more agricultural areas where there is more demand. However, I am definitely going to check out my Costco. That is a great price! Thanks for the tip.

Where to buy Organic Chicken Feed?

I think the BYC organic feed list is up to date based on what folks submitted. If I left one out that was posted in the thread, please PM me and I will try to fix it. If you want a new listing added, make sure to include as much contact info as possible. Thanks.

    I hate Long beach ca

The proposed changes to L.B. animal code has finally left the committee level and goes to the city council on Tuesday, July 16th at 5:PM. The date has been pushed off the agenda two times since early June, so there is a possibility it could be moved yet again. Keep your eyes peeled on the city...

7 week old Black Australorp- Roo/Pullet? 14 weeks old now on post #9

Can you post any pictures of them? Wattles and combs by 4 months old in pullets is normal, just not really large ones. By 4 months old, cockerels are usually getting curved tail feathers and pointy hackle and saddle feathers.

7 week old Black Australorp- Roo/Pullet? 14 weeks old now on post #9

Danib, If you got the chicks straight run, odds are, you will have to wait at least until they are 6 weeks old before they start showing initial signs of gender. However, since I first made this post back in 2009, I have had few chicks I thought were girls at 6 weeks age, that turned out to be...

IDEAL POULTRY - Bantam Cochins *April 17 HAWAII

Best wishes for your shipment of baby chicks. Did Ideal say if they would ship overnight or expedited since they were going to Hawaii? I have had shipments from Ideal when the weather in TX was in the upper 20s and almost all the chicks arrived alive to Calif. Almost everyone of the bantam...

    Chickens Galore in Norco, Ca

In addition to BYC, I belong to a group in the L.A. area called Los Angeles Chicken Enthusiasts. One of the new members there recently asked the same question and a few the members did have some feedback on Chickens Galore. Here is a link the thread.

    I hate Long beach ca

Here we go again... Tomorrow, March 18th, the Long Beach environmental committee will be reviewing the city manager's proposal for changes to the animal code, specifically regarding chickens, bees, and goats. There are far more restrictions and regulations, including inspections, than was...

    paint color for inside coop?

Poop comes in all sorts of colors, grey, white, black, brown, green, so there is no perfect shade to hide it all. Paint a camoflauge design or a bunch of decorative stuff and it will draw your eye away from the poop marks. We have a medium tone of tannish brown inside my coop with a bunch of...

If my 8' x 7' coop is on concrete pavers as its flooring, do I still need to dig a hardware cloth ap

I would think the weight of the coop would hold down the pavers to prevent them from being lifted up or dug out. However, over protection is much easier than dealing with the clean up after a raccoon massacres a flock.

Deep Litter on concrete pavers - how deep does it have to be?

I agree, 6 inches should be fine. I have concrete under my run and I put bedding down on top of it. It is only 4" deep due to the width of the 2 x 4 framing around the bottom of the run. I keep adding bedding on top as it compresses and breaks down. I clean it out and compost it every 3 to 5...

    Buy or build??

Is this what you are considering? This coop is at Pluck and Feather blog. I doubt the neighbors can see it from their side of the fence. However, all chickens make some noise at egg time, even my super quiet bantam cochins talk for a minute or two after laying an egg. Once the chickens reach...

AAA Roadside Assistance. Is It Worth It?

I have had it for almost 3 decades. We haven't used the road side assistance part of the insurance that many times over the years, but AAA does come with other features we find valuable. I think we have used the towing, maybe six times. We can do DMV registrations at their local office, get...
