I think a lot of that surge in numbers around here is due to DIYers. I have a lot of friends lately inquiringab out breeding their own poultry, not justmutts but pure bred birds.
Off toes are generally incubation. But I would keep my eyes open for the future to be safe.
You will need to stay on top of width, length and depth. Natural tendency is to down size so it is important you select your birds with the best shape and size.
I typically keep birds with the...
Classiest? Oh I would beg to differ(but I may be partial). But that would likely be what I would suggest to someone starting as well. Hamburgs are great, and a wonderful breed for eggs.
Chris is a great guy, he has great breeding practices and lovely birds. Recently made a trip down there to share birds with him. He has some older Buckeye cocks with shanks of mind-blowing width, truly incredible if you ask me.
Not quite sure of a reason to raise "high end" chickens. I think most will find that no matter the breed or variety there is no way to make a consistent or substantial profit. All chickens are expensive when you get down to crunching numbers. Why not raise a type you enjoy looking at or enjoy...
Chris McCary in Alabama is working with them. http://www.americanbuckeyepoultryclub.com/Breeders.html Has his email listed. He is in Helfin(Close to Atlanta).
Unfortunately I ended up deciding I did not have the time or capacity to handle them along with my Buckeyes, for now. So Chris got 3...
I have 3 Buckeye Bantam Cockerels I am looking to get rid of. Can meet at Williamstown Tractor Supply. Maybe $10 each. Sorry, no pullets. These are culls, but will be pretty handsome looking when they are grown. Just starting to crow and strut.
the changes seemed to be aimed toward people picking up a breed until it was accepted, then dropping the breed once accepted. I dont think it is healthy for the APA to accept all of the flavors of the month. But they are currently just proposals, could change at any moment.
Joseph, entertain me. I think I might like the added benefit of weight and clean dressing carcass. As well as introducing an alternative in color choice to La Flèche. Is the White Dorking, in fact, recessive? If so it may be a neat project overtime.
Do you know if they hold back any...
Odd request. But I'm getting meat strain Guineas in May. Would like to know the width of their shanks. I have 18 and 20 mm bands that are seamless and I want to find out if either will be small enough to fit them.
If someone has the birds, and the desire to find out it would be appreciated...
I hear of a lot of people keeping Black Soldier Fly, if even just for quick composting. My question is, how do you control the egg laying? Do they ever end up laying eggs into the neighbors landscaping(mulch)?
Large legs in general. Lots of thigh and drumstick meat.
I banded them last year with the 22mm ABA bands. Cockerels were too big for them to fit over the toes. Which ended up being a good thing, as I had no Cockerel that would have fit a 22mm.
I've not seen Chris' flock in person. But...
Laura haggarty. Got 30 chicks in Spring 2013. Culled to what I wanted, down to six. Very happy with this year's crop.
Also, I use ABA bands. Banded my first culling of pullets this morning. The 22mm bands barely fit over the foot at this point.
