I put ornamental stones (big enough the chickens can't scratch them out) around my plants and plant strong smelling herbs in amongst my flowers. Some of my chickens are much more determined than the others but so far they've not completely destroyed my potted plants.
Black chick could be Jersey Giant or if it gets faint reddish feathers on its breast it would be a black sex-link. I have Jersey Giants and it looks very much like mine.

I have just noticed your post about your turkeys and whether they are hens or jakes and you asked if I'd since decided what sex my turkeys are. They are indeed hens...they've even started laying eggs which I'm trying my hand at incubating. Wish me luck! LOL

Unfortunately I'm afraid you've confirmed my suspicion, I just hoped so much to have a male and female and someday some Narragansett poults. So, should I get more than one or two hens and if I do will this cause my toms to be aggressive? Thanks a million, chooks4life!
I have two Narragansett turkeys that are about four months old. They are very similar in appearance except one has a few more caruncles, a larger snood, and head gets red more often. I've even seen him/her strut very briefly when it was very young and now it puffs up when there is a wild duck...
He has a few white feathers in the back portion of his crest. He is beautiful to me but the white feathers disqualifies him for any type of poultry show. The white feathers really make him look like a rock star! :-D
I bought 2 bronze turkeys just before Easter this year and some how managed to get a male and female from a straight run bin at the local feed store. In the past 3 months I'd fallen in love with my turkeys as this is the first time I'd ever had poultry other than chickens. We've had the most...
