We have a large murder of crows. They keep the pair of mating hawks at bay. The chickens free range. They listen to the crows. I would be so much more worried about them if the crows weren't around to guard against the hawks. Leave them alone and be thankful they are there.
Ok, I thought so, just her tail is so much longer and pointier than the others and her neck is different. She is a funny little soul, doesn't mind being picked up, follows me around, wants to see what I'm doing all the time.
I purchased 10 barred rocks and thought (think?) they are all hens, but this one has such a long tail and his/her mane is fluffier, and he/she just has a different look, I started thinking maybe she is really a he. At 11 weeks, none of them have really any kind of comb to speak of, but this...
Nambroth, that is it exactly - the long term health effects. You know, when you are young (and your animals are young), you can tolerate a lot of stuff: junk food, spicy food, rich food, a date with Jack Daniels, a face plant off the back of your favorite horse, and so on. I am/was healthy but...
Well, hey, if you are happy feeding your dog predominately corn and other grain products with some pretty hefty preservatives added even when labeled “natural”, don't have any trouble with them breaking out in allergic attacks, then fine, call it emotional, I don’t care. I did my due diligence...
I haven't read all 10 pages either, but I can tell you my experience with purina feeds for my horses, dog and multiple cats: I fed purina for years- strategy for the horses and a variety of different purina ones of the others. My dog, always healthy and hardy mixed breed rescue, starting...
You guys are making me feel bad, I'm not near as careful. I have a small compost pile in one little area of their run. In goes grass clippings, crushed egg shells, orange peels, onion peels, weeds pulled from the flower beds, dinner plate scrapings, etc. i never chop anything up. Every few days...
I transplanted daylillies into my 9 week old barred rocks' run and there is a lot of white clover in there too. So far, it has all done very well. There are 10 of them and they've been in it for 3-4 weeks or so. I don't think anything can kill daylillies. I'd like to get something taller in...
I'd just take mine out and let them run loose while I sat out there with them with a book. Mine pretty much stayed together and didn't want to wonder too far. It is in the 70s temperature-wise and they were very happy. I use a big plastic fan-shaped leaf rake to herd them if needed. It looks...
Hi FarmFamily, we are neighbors! I have 10 8-week old barred rocks. I posted our chicken house building saga in the Coop Building section. How bout you?
Thanks everyone for the kind words! My eye is still very red but I think it will be ok.
I am so sorry to hear of the bobcat attack. We hope we built this one very secure with no gaps even small enough for a thin snake to get through. I was worried about exactly that kind of thing. There are...
Ok, so this was about Day 1, what a mess
Getting ready to put the outside door and it is getting closer
Little door for the chickens to go outside is in and sand on the floor.
They come out on their fancy brick pathway
The gangplank flips down. It needs to be painted...
We have a very open horse barn with two empty stall areas on one side of the concrete aisle and four built-out and occupied horse stalls on the other side.
It is a typical 12x12 stall area with the big dutch door window to the outside and a stall door size opening to the barn aisleway with...
Hi,
I have a farm in Coweta county which is about 30 minutes south of the Atlanta airport. It is home to a small flock of barred rocks, some horses, a dog and a few cats. They all allow my husband, three daughters and myself to live there as long as we feed them when they want. :)
