If you feel it is only being broody, just make sure that she is happy and has access to food and water. She will soon get the idea no eggs for her to sit on. Next time see if someone near has a rooster and possibly fertile eggs for her to sit on:)
Time can range from early morning to mid morning. If you can keep your hens in until 11ish am and you should get a full days quota, or encourage those who are not laying in the nest boxes to do so.
Hi newandjustafew - are you sure they are not laying, roosters will mount those hens which are productive (egg layers). Could your hens be laying in a new spot?
Hi Vehve, I don't have any experience with this breed, I would say that laying should not be very far away. I'm very interested with your weekly study, keep it up and certainly looking forward to photos of the eggs:)
Hi Fluffy and Ginger - I have heard of a couple of cases whereby the hens are not laying as well as you would expect. Due to the season, it just maybe that your hen is not getting enough to eat. Pollard is great as a mash, and is good energy source. Rolled Oats made into a porridge:)

I have two hens sharing the raising of chicks.
How long will they protect the chicks?
Should I be separating them and if so at what age?
Will the hens continue not to lay while they are looking after the chickes. When will they start laying again after hatching?

I was giving the eggs away, but then approached a local cafe and now sell. I have a chicken jar at home and put the money in here. The chickens now pay for their food.
Yes there are certainly advantages of where you live:) - I will have to keep an eye on snakes during summer, in the past haven't had issues as my work dogs are often off the chain during the day. Also my kids are outside making lots of noise
I built a mobil coop yesterday - idea to be able to easily moved by one person. I have realized not large enough to house 2 chickens at all times. But really ideal for a broody hen, you wish to keep seperate or for those hens that need to be kept separate. Please keep in mind that I come from...
