    Need advice on loud chicken!

LOL! I have 10 layers in my backyard flock. It was a calm Sunday afternoon, until three hens began literally bitching because two hens are already in the one and only favorite nesting box. The other three are completely ignored! They are so loud, I keep throwing them treats...to no avail...

    Very hurt leg...

One of my new Wellsummer layers was bullied by an over aggressive hen...I have no idea how, but one of her legs is hurt so badly it is unusable (in addition to a big chunk bitten out of her comb). The skin isn't broken and I don't think the leg is actually broken, perhaps it is dislocated...

    Broken leg/chicken sling

Very interesting...how is she doing? One of my new layers was bullied by an over aggressive hen...I have no idea how, but one of her legs is unusable (in addition to a big chunk bitten out of her comb). The skin isn't broken and I don't think the leg is actually broken, perhaps dislocated...

Converting Tree fort to chicken coop...

I like your idea of a landing! My daughter has an amazing chicken house that my husband built for her, the ceiling is about 12 feet high, with open rafters. Roosting bars installed 3-4 feet off the ground. Guess where the hens roost at night? Yep! BUT, sometimes her girls get bumble feet...

Converting Tree fort to chicken coop...

We have a substantial and well built people ladder to get into the area, and I think we will do a trap door so that I can drop the shavings/poop out, and then easily clean up from below. This is all theory, nothing is in place. I agree with you, they will probably just fly down to the ground...

(Just in case you wonder, 4 barred rocks, 3 easter eggers, 1 cherry egger, 2 wellsummers, 1 black australorp) Initially my husband took the space under our tree...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Hi...I have been reading your posts about the broody house..I love it! I have 11 chicks coming in two weeks, and so excited. My question is...what is your average nighttime temperature? It will be mid March in Central CA, and the nighttime should be in the 40's. The area I want to set up for...

    my chicken(s) ate three nails

I just caught my favorite hen eating a short nail! I hope it passes. How did your hen fare? Dumb birds, won't eat some good and healthy things, I was so surprised she snatched the nail!

    Floppy comb?

I'm curious...my 5 month old NHR laid her first egg yesterday (yeah!!!!) and today her comb is floppy! I read in one forum that she may be dehydrated, but otherwise she looks and acts fine. Glad to hear that it may just be too tall. Maybe her body is a bit stressed and this is a...

My Orpington is sleeping in new nesting box!

I have five girls...the three oldest should be laying any day now. The two newest girls are about 3 weeks younger. The coop is a fairly new addition, and the girls have been sleeping in it about a month...the two Orpington's (the two youngest) won't sleep on the roosting bar...they like the...

Fermented feed vs. sprouted grain feed

This was very helpful. I began fermenting, the girls love it...and wondered about sprouting. Definitely something to add to their menu for the winter. I am also going to (yuk) get some crickets!!

Post pics of your chicks thread!!!

Oh oh! Better read up on "Chicken Math" posts! Be prepared! Chickens are addictive! I have heard that. We live in town and getting away with 4 will be a miracle. Already wishing I could have more. A wonderful learning experience for my 7 yr old grandson, as well as myself.
