My chicks have started randomly shaking their heads?

My wyandotte chicks were doing this also. I started supplementing their water with Poultry Provita which is vitamins and probiotics. They no longer shake their head randomly and are all doing well at 15 weeks old. Enjoy your chicks...they grow up sooo fast!!

    Fencing Ideas?

I would plant evergreens such as yews, so that they have cover all year round. Of course they could also use these to gain height to fly out of the run. I was able to capture a picture this morning of the hawk that watches my run. Do you have a lot of chickens?

    Fencing Ideas?

Animals970, where are you located to not be concerned about aerial predators? Let me tell you by first hand experience... I was cleaning my chicken coop and heard the roosters making their aerial warning sounds. I quickly stepped out of the coop and there was a hawk on the ground right in...

    Dust bath question

Even the chicks that are only a week old love to dust bath. The organic seed starting mix works well for my chicks. It makes a dusty mess in the area where the brooder is, but they really enjoy it. The dust box will need refilled every week or so because the chicks use it and spill it. Enjoy...

14 week old Silver Laced / Golden Laced Wyandottes from Hatchery

Thanks for letting me know. Lacy definitely looks to have sickle feathers. Yikes!! I paid 4.23 for a day old male chick then. (They were vaccinated for Mareck's) Have you ever got a refund from a hatchery if the chick was male not female?

    Do Not Change the Litter...

Okay, I found out that the FDA directs this statement to be put on medicated feeds. The reasoning behind it is that the medicine, Amprolium, will cycle through the chicks and into the litter. It will end up in the litter through the chicks feces and if remained in the litter will continue...

    Do Not Change the Litter...

I just purchased a 50 lb. bag of Purina Start and Grow Sunfresh Medicated Crumbles for six day old chicks we are picking up in a couple of days. There is a statement on the white tag sewn onto the bottom of the bag under the Heading CAUTION, it reads- "Do not change the litter while giving...

    Mash, Pellets or Crumbles? Poll!

My eleven chickens prefer crumbles. They are all pullets, about 30 weeks old. I have three feeders hanging, one inside the coop which has pellets and two under the coop, one has pellets and the other has crumbles. The chickens do not eat the pellets but will go through a 7 lb feeder of...

how long til my new hen lays?

So, thebitty, did she start laying for you? I am in the same situation. I purchased a couple of pullets that are suppose to be at POL (point of lay), but one only layed once and the other not at all. We've had them for a over two weeks now. They were added to a flock of six, one being a...

    Is Stumpy a Rooster?

Well, Stumpy is definitely a cockerel. He has started crowing early in the morning, 5:45AM. At first it was a pretty rough sound, but he has improved drastically this past week. He was just over 10 weeks old when he started this. He has a very nice sound. Yes, these Amber Links are very...

1 thing I wish I knew when I was starting out...

One thing I wish I knew when starting out is that building an external nesting box using 18inch on center studs is not a shortcut. If you are building the coop from the ground up, Do not get in a hurry starting out by not framing in the place where the nesting boxes will be. I wanted the walls...

    Is Stumpy a Rooster?

Okay, thanks cccccccchickens. I'll assume they are five weeks old. These are our first, and have been great entertainment. I dug up a lot of earthworms and fed them as a treat. It took awhile for the chicks to figure out it was food and eat. Now, they do not seem all that interested in...
