    Best breed for backyard coop?

My two dorkings would be the loudest amongst all my girls and the most skitish! The Langshan is the quietest of the lot - hardly ever making a sound - apart from the egg song. Beautiful looking chook - on my list to get more of. I have come to the conclusion its more to do with personality of...

Can someone tell me just to give up hope and biff the eggs!

I know - thanks for your support. This is the second hatch for the barred rock and she had no luck the first time either (infertile rooster!). She has plucked herself bare, hardly ever gets off the nest, is always tidying up and looks so proud.

Can someone tell me just to give up hope and biff the eggs!

Ok, have just done the float test . They all floated with about 20% above water but I didnt see any movement. So I can assume that the chicks did develop but died around about hatching time. Will leave under the girls just one more day:/

Can someone tell me just to give up hope and biff the eggs!

Ok, day 23 and only one little pip on day 19 from the 6 Langshan eggs I have shared between my broody buff orp and barred rock. I know I should give up! Fertile eggs from a reputable brooder so can only assume Mr Postman was very rough and/or the mayhem in the chook house with egg and nest...

    Names for our new peeps

Some of my girls are named after Coronation St characters (famous Brit soap for those of you who have never heard of it ...). Betty, Rita, Mavis Thelma , and Violet and my two Light Sussex are named Patsy and Edwina (Ab Fab - another great Brit programme). I also like flower names as well, you...

Anyone ever sold point of lay pullets?

Over here in NZ we pay between NZ$40-50 for a POL purebreed chook. Don't get the variety either due to the strict guaranteen/import laws. Would like to be able to get Jersey Giants..........sigh.......

    Bare Belly on Broody Hen

Both of my broody girls have bare chests too. It freaked me out when I first saw them and all the feathers laying around the nest but I quickly learnt that it was normal.

    Girls stealing eggs

Thanks everyone for your replies. I don't have incubator, so just hope that I can sneak eggs to the other broody, unless they both hatch eggs from the first batch at the same time. We will work something out - hey - maybe my Light Sussex who is just starting to show signs of being broody can...

    Girls stealing eggs

Funny you should say that, its the Buff Orp who I think is stealing the eggs (they also swap nests so it does get a bit confusing). The Buff always seems to have the most eggs :-)

    Girls stealing eggs

A friend is using our boody hens to hatch some of his flocks fertilised eggs (his hens don't go broody!!!). Two batches of eggs placed a week apart under two different hens. All going well, but I should of marked each batch, the girls are constantly stealing each other eggs even though the...

Nesting Box bedding... straw or hay?

I've just switched to pine shavings as I heard that hay and especially straw has more chance of habouring little pestie beasties ie mites etc. I like the idea of sredded paper so I'm going to try that as well :-)

help! mites in with a broody hen

Just the other day I lost a very broody young buff orpington to chicken/red mites :-( Because she sat on the nest for so long, the mites, which I had no idea where there , had a field day on her and she died, I guess to anemia. One day she was ok just obsessing about getting back on the...

6 months old and no eggs yet!

My heavy breeds didn't start laying until nearly 8 months....squatting is a good sign that they are not far away

    Betty is making me nervous...

I got three supposedly "girl" barred rocks earlier on in the year, all roughtly the same age and Polly turned out to be a Percy. I could actually tell quite early on as Polly/Percy was very much darker than the other two and developed wattles etc quicker than the others even though he/she was...

What is your favorite breed of quiet calm hen?

I have 1 light sussex, 2 buff orps and 2 barred rocks and the light sussex is definately the calmest and quietest. She will just stand there and let us pick her up, my oldest son carries her around everywhere. My 2 buff orps are "scatty" and a sparrow flying past will scare them (!!!). Mind...

    keeping water in brooder clean

My friend just the other day saw one of her chicks drinking out of the rabbits nipple drinker. The other chicken with it was apparently fascinated with the bubble going up the bottle!!!!

leg bands on chicks and flock

I use the plastic 18mm snap/click on type for my heavy breeds. They are really easy to put on and take off. I use leg bands as one barred rock/buff orp can seem the same to the kids and hubby and it makes it easier for them to tell me who is doing what etc. I put them on when they were about...
