    YESSS ! i agree ! Know what you want/expect out of your flock and research breeds. Do you want them for eggs? meat? companionship? ornamental? taking into consideration your climate is important too. Some Chickens don't do well in heat.

    From what i understand ...river sand is completely safe and best to use....washed construction sand is pretty darn safe and perfectly ok to use, and due to its jagged structure its keeps their feet clean and trims their nails at the same time. It also doubles as grit for them.....and sandbox...

    Hi Keltara ! great info ! can they use the sand as grit too? or do you provide that separate? i have a dirt floor and a dry climate but want to add some sand so its easier to scoop the poop...its quite rocky now

    Hi Sherri ! Karen recommended river sand as opposed to play sand...i'm lucky that my property is mostly river sand including the inside of the coop. However, i've heard plenty of people using the play sand...I'm not sure what the downfall is...possible toxins? I know it says safe for children...
