Hmm 28" to railing off floor seems a bit high. Any way you could lower them 10" or so? I think you would find that ideal...if you could I would also add an intermediate roost at say 24" off floor? That way they don't have to jump so high or go so far down was what I was told. Either way though...

The nest boxes shouldn't be any taller off floor than your lowest roost. My lowest roost is 24" so I made my nest boxes 18" which I am told is pretty standard.

Presently we only have 9 hens. It was supposed to be 12 but 3 turned out to be Roos. Man they are mean to the hens. I've already snuffed one that's when the other 2 came out. So today I may take another and hope the remaining Roo is nicer. I want a rooster but these have all been Jersey Giants...

Ok so I built 5 nest boxes today. My chickens layed their first eggs yesterday so I wasted no time. Anyway, I was wondering should I put anything in there like straw or pine shavings?
