Ambient temp this morning was -15 and with the windchill it was -32. Opened the coop door this morning and they all came pouring out....sheww. Tonights supposed to be 3 so theres a warm up coming, it's gonna be 22 tomorrow...cannot wait.

Well, I've made alot of modifications to the coop and run, in this kind of weather you learn real fast what is needed . It's -3 today and tomorrow with wnd chills to -25. Have fresh straw up in the coop walls again, which i find you have to change out about every week cause it starts to fall...
dunno, i thought about that too, but the straw is going to deteriorate at some point, just not sure when. Then you would have to pull all the chicken wire and put new straw in....the wife mentioned it to me too, just not sure i wanna go that way.
Well, they all made it with no problem. Let them out alittle today, it's a balmy 9 degrees. I think this summer I will do some remodeling in the coop. Gonna use r19 in the walls and cover it with fitted plywood. Also going to put a double paned window in with screen to replace the old...
Well, so far so good. They are doing ok. I am contemplating removing the cardboard from the window, at least the top half to allow some light and maybe some warmth in.
Just checked the water...lol....it's not even frozen...lol. Feels warm in the actually. Hopefully tonight i've made it comfotable enough they will be good to go.

I just took the hay and straw and kept them in 6 inch thick squars and shoved them inbetween the upright 2x4 boards, it's a tight fit so they stay put. Any place that didnt want to stay I just started stuffing it till it stayed, not ideal but very effective...lol. I put thick...
I'm in northern Indiana where we are getting 14-17 inches of snow by the time this storm is done, snowing like crazy now. Once the storm is over they are calling for ambient temps of -10 and with the wind chill could be -40. I have a very nice coop, it's non insulated....but....I put two bails...
I want to build something for my chickens to get up on in there coop, they like to be high. Does anybody have any ideas or pics of things they have built for the chickens to climb on?
