Our Coop D'Ville
We got our first chickens in 2009 and converted an old shed attached to our garage (below) into an insulated coop. We live in Maine.
The first thing we did was put concrete flooring down. We chose concrete for several reasons: we wanted something...
The finished coop!
We planted 4 grape vines and some peas around the perimeter. The raised bed at the end will have veggies. The inside is pictured below in a pre-chicken pristine state!

Is anyone planning on going to the swaps this weekend? I am moving to AK in two weeks and trying to find a good home for my hybrid rooster Ursus (i.e. where he can have his own flock of hens/not be dinner). He's about 3 months old and a really nice/friendly bird. Beautiful colors (green, flecks...
I'm moving and hoping to find a home for my sweet little rooster...his name is Ursus. I'd like to find a good home for him where he can be a valued flock member and not dinner. If you're interested, please email me information about your flock. I'm willing to drop him off within 50 miles or so...
Thanks everyone! I was going to try the apple trick, and keep them covered. I took one of my other chickens to the vet once in a hamper and she just lay down and chilled out, no problem. I think the kennel will work well. I'm going to be traveling from Maine to Washington State, and to Alaska on...
Hello - I'd like to get some feedback about best ways to travel with chickens...and how to feed/water them en route etc. I'll be taking 3 chickens (~3mos old) on a cross country trip. I'll be taking my honda civic and have purchased 2 different types of crates. 1) a dog kennel for "medium sized...
Yeah, I am pretty happy with the outcome...I was going to take her back to the vet and have her do the digging if it came to that. With the eggs, she stopped laying. I'm not too worried about it as they go through phases. She laid a couple while on it and has since stopped, maybe since going to...
Thanks for the info! I ended up weighing out the powder antibiotic at work - it was a little bit less than a tablespoon for 1 gal of water. I gave her that for 5 days on, 5 days and then repeated again. I also wiped her feet off with a disinfectant soap each day followed by a wipe of betadine...
Here's an update - any additional thoughts on sex? The black one is just so huge/red relative to the others I'm thinking it might be a rooster...

I hatched out 3 hybrid chicks this year from my 1+ year old mixed flock about 2 months ago. One of the chicks is quite large but still smaller than the adults. I've introduced this chick to a couple of my hens (araucana and cochin) and both times the chick has flared it's neck feathers and tried...
One of my 13 layer hens has Bumblefoot. The vet told me to give her water with 400mg/gal of Duramycin for 5 days on, followed by 5 days off and then repeat. Has anyone tried this and does it work well? More importantly, does it have any negative side effects? She doesn't like to be separated...
Anyone have experience with this? We're considering a move from Maine to AK so we'd be crossing into Canada and then back into the US via the Yukon/AK highway route...I read somewhere there are border vets that will check their health - any quarantine necessary? Anyone know more details or who...
Can you just be sure to lock up? If this has happened several times (gone for 15 minutes, chickens dead upon return) why don't you just remove the opportunity for the fox to get your hens (no shooting required).
Yeah - the third one does kind of have the buttercup look. However, he/she hatched out of one of my light brown eggs and has the feathers down the legs like a cochin (the buttercup is my only hen that has white eggs which is what the little black one with the huge mohawk hatched out of)...I'll...
