    Sheep or Goat

What does your pasture look like right now? If you are trying to get rid of tall weeds or immature trees, get goats. If you just need your grass trimmed, get sheep. Goats are ten times more irritating than sheep. I have had both, and while I greatly prefer the sheep, they are inferior to goats...

Little Daddy & his ginormous comb get a breeder condo...new pics pg 44

:O HOLY MACKEREL!!! This reminds me of those playdoh toys I had as a kid.. You put the playdoh in the guys mouth and then clamp it shut, and it jets out of his head at the speed of light!

Most productive layers? Also, welsummers vs. marans?

Well, I know that the yolk in the egg is the part which the chick feeds off of for nutrients throughout development as well as a couple of days after hatching. Before they hatch, they suck the yolk into their bodies so that they can keep feeding off of it. My guess is that with two yolks, either...

Most productive layers? Also, welsummers vs. marans?

I've heard that the more they lay, the lighter their eggs are. Thanks, everyone! That was extremely helpful for me!

Most productive layers? Also, welsummers vs. marans?

I'm doing some research for my next purchase of laying hens, and I have a couple of questions. First of all, what is the most productive breed for eggs? McMurray sells a leghorn which lays an egg every day, and Stromberg sells a cherry egger which lays frequently as well. In your opinion, of...

    Medicated versus unmedicated chick starter

My personal belief/opinion is that medicated feed restricts a chick's ability to develop its own immune system, and therefor makes it dependant on the medicated feed for a period afterwards. I don't use it, but alot of people do and swear by it. Nutritionally, I have no idea what the difference is.

    Wyandottes are not eating. :/

Nobody was pasted up, and I make my own food for the bantams, after a horrible choking incident last year. The food I make consists of pedialyte, egg yolk, oatmeal, and baby food. It's very thick and pasty, so I feed it on a constant rotation with mixed pedialyte and water, often through a...

    Wyandottes are not eating. :/

Everyone has been good today, actually! I bought some mealworms and the chicks had a blast while getting some good nutrition at the same time.

Fed crickets to my chicks, it was hilarious!

They love mealworms and waxworms too, but I'd have to agree that crickets and moths are MUCH more entertaining! I'll never forget when the ducklings were kidnapping frogs from our little pond. My 3 y/o niece loves the frogs, so she was chasing the ducklings trying to get them back. It was hilarious!

    Wyandottes are not eating. :/

That smiley running around made me about fall out of my chair. For some reason I found that especially entertaining. I think that next year, I'm going to buy directly from the hatchery rather than ye ol' L&M fleet. Now the "polish" (he's really a new hampshire, which is better, IMO) is...

    Wyandottes are not eating. :/

UCH stands for "under cage heater", and while that normally means a heat lamp, for me it is a shelf system. Two shelves. Heater on bottom shelf, chicks on top shelf. Since I keep my chicks in my bedroom, I can't handle heaters that generate light.. I'm one of those "dark cave" sleepers. Temps...

    Wyandottes are not eating. :/

Bantams are amazing little things! They're fragile, friendly, and they make darn good chickens for people who don't have much space. Whenever I go to get new layers, I can't resist bringing home a bantam or two.. Or four. Now everyone is scratching and eating and chirping and falling asleep in...

    Wyandottes are not eating. :/

They went after the yogurt like madmen, but they didn't care for the mash all that much at first, but I mixed some into the yogurt and as I evened the ratio, they kept eating, so hopefully they're getting sustainable nutrition from that for the moment. I've noticed that they don't chirp as long...

Well, I went up to ye ol' L&M fleet the other day and got myself a nice little mixture of layers and pets. 4 EE pullets 4 colorful cochin bantams 2 welsummer pullets 2 RIR pullets 4 production red pullets 1 grumpy brahma cockerel and 2 wyandotte pullets.. Now, bringing them home, I was...

How to properly preserve rabbit pelt?

I know this thread is probably a billion years old (it came up on google), but I just wanted to say that you should try not to get your pelt wet after the initial drying, unless you're using a soaking method. Buy Borax powder. It's a kind of laundry soap. Sprinkle that on it rather than a bar...

    Lost Alice : (....UPDATE....and I killed her

You know, I've been pondering the last few minutes (while battling with paypal) and I started to think... ALOT of chickens are bred to grow quickly or get fat. Like, people breed them that way on purpose, intending them to live short lives and make tasty meals. So, even if you kept her and...
